Purchase Scantool

Post by cktuttle »

Does anyone know of a good source of scantools for a 99 jetta A3? My Bently book lists a VW part # of VAG 1551. I havent even asked the dealer because I'm sure the price would be exorbinant.

Try www.ross-tech.com for a laptop adapter and software that does everything the 1551/1552 will do. Also www.baumtools.com for scan tools and other software emulators.

I've used an earlier version of the Baum Tools VDS-PRO that I got before Baum took over the product. They have promised a major upgrade for years that has yet to show up, so they don't seem as responsive as I'd like.
Ross-Tech actively supports his product, with an on-line forum of users. I downloaded the demo of VAG-COM and it seems to be well done. If the laptop-based tool will work for you I would suggest this one.
You can also get the genuine VW VAG1552 from http://www.samstagsales.com/vag1552.htm
if that fits your needs better.

Thanks again. I am new to the BB. My 99 jetta a3 is getting to the point where it will need wrenching ,and since I don't trust the dealer not to f up my car I will have to learn more how to take care of it my self.My last VW was a 86 golf that I drove for 240,000 miles so I had most of it figured out. I appreciate your info and follow up also.

Thanks again!!!

I use the BAUM tool scanner everyday. It is a great tool. For a personal home scanner it is way too much. In terms of price and user friendlyness. The set up we have a work costs $8000.00 we have all the euro car kits I.E. VW Audi MB BWM Saab Volvo. I think the basic OBDII scanner costs about $5000.00

The other problem is that Audi and VW set their down stream Data up in a block format. 0-255 you have to know what block to enter for that bit of info. For example. Timing is block 010

RPM XXXX
injector M/S X.XX
mapped timing 13.0
actual timing 12.0

You may consitter buying a more generic scanner. Auto X-ray makes one that is OK. I bought a OTC monitor 4000 enhanced with domestic/asian and the OBDII updated till 2001 used for $500.00 It is a very good generic scanner, but it is very limited compared to the BAUM tool scanner.

Keep in mind what your needs are and be aware that ascannerjust give you info Data stream and codes. I use my Digital Storage Ocliscope much more than the scanner.

Thanks for the info.

I have looked at the Ross tools Vag-com VW vag 1552 emulator solution and I think that will be the way I will go. Its around 200$ so the price is right. One fly in the ointment is that the 80$ bently shop manual that I bought is not the official "shop": manual so it doesnt list the codes Do you know of another cheaper source for the codes?

Either way thannks for taking thre ti reply.
