Harnesses, connectors, and wiring

Post by turbo6bar »

I was wondering if any of you guys know of any good sources for multi-stranded wire, and Weatherpack connectors or similar. The Perfect Power group buy would be even better if I can buy the above in bulk and send each buyer a small "care pack" of goodies.

I heard there was a Boeing engineer on the forums. I sure could use your advice.

Your closest NAPA should carry weatherpack stuff. Getting wire beyond the basic 6-8 solid colours is more difficult Image

Harnesses, connectors, and wiring

Gee, I wonder if you mean me? I work for Boeing but not as an engineer. I work with engineering quite a bit on production related issues and concerns, Planning on how to get it in the airplane, and Quality on how to assure good product for our flying customers. But please don't call me an engineer! I'm just a sparkie.

I have a link buried somewhere in this 'puter on connectors that was sent to me last fall. It looks to be very promising and the product lines looks to be quite varied. I have not researched them yet nor dealt with them so I can't give a yeah or nay.

Like Sharkey mentioned, getting the 20 or so varied colors and striped wire to make a loom with is the most difficult part. I have a few easy avenues for some of it but not all.

The 1st place to go is your local wrecking yard. A veritable garden of wire and connectors grows there. And most of that stuff is sold as scrap so the prices are cheap or should be. The connectors used by GM are used by quite a few suppliers. Go to your local Napa store for a decent crimper, wire striper, contacts, and contact removal tools. Armed with the removal tool and some simple hand tools Some cutters and pliers couple of screw drivers, etc., you will leave the junk yard with most of what you will need to do a quality job. I will add the link to the above mentioned place when I find it.

Another source I just discovered but haven't been down that path yet, is wire loom kits that can be supplied by Haltech. It was just mentioned to me in passing by them when I got an ECU connector from them for my F9A to build another loom. Maybe worth a call to Texas.

Other sources of supplies like for sleeving, shrink tubing, Bosch injector plugs, etc. is slowly building in my favorites and will someday end up on my web site and/or here.

to be continued.

MSD sells pre-packaged GM style weather pac connectors, contacts, and an assembly tool. Any MSD distributor should be able to get them. One of my recent favorite sources for durable electrical supplies has been West Marine, a nation-wide boat parts and supply house. There stuff is boater-resistant (read: tough and salt/wet environment resistant) real good quality wire, connectors, and switches. Not cheap, but good quality never is! I'll never go back to the auto parts store junk again.

Check your local NAPA before buying marked up MSD crap. Most FLAPS carry these either as a complete male-female set, or as indiviual components (connector bodies, pins, and grommets).
