Where do you find a fuel pressure check valve?

Post by Victor H »

I am running a Haltech system (well not quite yet, thankfully I waited on buying the brain, given the recent upgrades) but I want my car to be fuel injection ready. I have the dual fuel lines as well as the fuel injection pump (plus all the other goodies but the brain), and 1976 Fuel injection gas tank (Thanks Tom for the advice!). Now two questions, where or what kind of bracket will fit the fuel pump (from Berg) and where do I find it? And where do I get, and what kind do I want, of the fuel pressure check valve? Is that mounted right next to the pump or up by the engine? Thanks to those of you in the know.

Go to a Golf and get the banjo and the check valve bolt that holds it onto its fuel pump. Good junk yard stuff. I can;t remember what I used for a bracket to mount mine(same pump, out of a atmos 911), it is similar to a coil mount. I then rubber mounted that using Golf radiator support rubber bisquets, again to the junk yard. On my Notch, the 944 pump did fit a coil bracket, slick when coupled with a t3 fuel filter bracket and a vanagon filter and a larger outlet on the tank. Looks so damn factory on my notch, Image . I think that is all covered somewhere on my site, but back out to the garage, gotta get the car ready, 9 days to the show.

A check valve maintains fuel pressure between the outlet of the pump and the pressure regulator after the engine is shut down. This pressure is in the fuel loop common to the injectors on the engine. Why this is done is to have full pressure at the injectors when the engine 1st cranks over to start thus reducing cranking revolutions required. This is the reason it was developed by the oem manufacturers of the EFI systems that employ it.

Hi
I just prime my pumps by leaving the ignition on for a few seconds until the relay stops them, it starts and idles 1st time. The pumps I used came with a hard foam sleeve to fit between the bracket and pump. I used this and held it in place with big hose clamp.

I don't really know what year but I have never looked at a pump out of a Golf that didn't have one. The bolt/check valve thingamabob I think is used thruout VW/Porsche/Audi so you should be able to get one quite easily.

Okay, I got the pressure check valve but what about the banjo? All I could find were banjos that had a steel or rubber line swedged on and another connected a few inches away. Not the type of thing that will hook up to my fuel filter. I don't suppose a Weber banjo would fit? Also, since we're talking high pressure I like the idea of a permanent fitting but how to make that fit for the beetle is the question. Any ideas. What did you do Tom?

Hi
Most swaged hose fittings can be cut off and a new hose swaged on.

Vic, maybe I'm crazy but I just cut off the swedged part and slipped some good quality FI rated hose on , two VW FI clamps and called it good. I do not use the gear drive worm clamps due to the fact they can cut hose if over tightened. I run a filter only on the intake side of the pump from a Vanagon, plastic large hose barbed one. If I were to put one on the pressure side, I would use a metal canister type, one rated for the pressure. I found one banjo/hose assembly that had almost perfect bends to work with my installs then mounted the pump and did minor tubing tweaks and was happy. No leaks or rubbing so I fgeel I can trust it for the long term.
