As for the 240 Volvo cooling system the only problem I've heard of was that the anti freeze wasn't changed at the 30,000 mile or 2 year which ever comes first- Volvo recommends if the Volvo anti-freeze(blue-green color) was not used then it should be changed every 12 months.
Other brands of A/F might cause electrolysis
in the aluminum head. In 30+ years of working on Volvos and VWs I've replaced 2 240 heads due to corrosion in the heads both times the owners never had the A/F replaced.

Volvo engines: Early Volvo's were designed for the cooler climes of Sweden. Driving to Las Vegas in the sunner, a/c on and 110 outside was sometimes a bit much for the stock cooling system. For your conversion, be sure to have at least as much cooling capacity as the original donor car. As long as you don't add an a/c unit in front of the radiator you shouldn't have any problems. Don't forget an electric fan... Your engine should be at least a B-21,
2100cc, O/H cam, fi etc, depending on year. You should have a Volvo manual anyway for the year of the donor car.

Good research on the bell housing.

Engine is going in an off road buggy, so no a/c worries there, a/c is curteousy of the wind in your hair.... 110 degrees in Cumbria (or England!) oh I wish!!!!!

I'll be using as much of original cooling system as possible - practicalities and budget - I might have to go to a wider shallower rad, but I'll get one from a car with comparable cc's. Audi's have good rads - small but mega fine finning.

I'll search out the link to the SA bell housing site it had some good bloodhound work on it.

Antifreeze issues sound like wbx's. 240 has been dealer serviced from new - good news!

If you tell me a bit more about the car and the engine (model year, carburated/FI, catalytic or not etc.) I might be able to tell you the correct engine type. If it is a 2,3 liter engine, it´s one of the B23 or B230 series engines.

BTW it was -44 degrees farenheit the night before newyears up north...

It's a 2.3 fuel injected, block is painted red. Don't know about the catalyst. It's in a 240 glt estate UK F registration mark which I'm guessing is around 1990ish.

We're getting easterly winds so your cold is coming over to us!! Brrrrrrrr. Love our V70's heated seats!

Ok, until 1988 the 200 series GLT model came with two different engines, the B230E and the B230F, after that the only engine availible was the B230F.
The extra 0 designates engines that had lowered internal friction and therefor increased mpg. Both engines are fuelinjected, the difference is that the F engine had a catalytic converter.
B230E = 95 kW ~131 hp
B230F = 85 kW ~113 hp

PS. I´ve heard stories of more than 300 hp from theese engines... DS.

Well, the earlier B23E engine used until 84 did put out about 100 kW wich is closer to 140 hp.

Anyway, dig out the VIN number and go to http://www.volvoworld.com/VIN/vin81-96.htm

If you need more info check out www.brickboard.com and www.turbobricks.com they will probably be able to help you more.

After a bit of thought it is probably pre 1988, any brits out there with a better method of calculating UK reg ages than a finger in the wind?

The way it shifts the old barge it's got to have more than 113hp! Can't be the catalyst model....... It should get to around 140hp if I get rid of the power steering and cooling fan.

300hp????? do you know of any laymans tuning sites for the Ovlov? i did a search on google but didn't get much, mostly Swedish and being a smug lazy English speaker I don't speak anything else. (to my eternal shame - it never ceases to amaze me the lingistic perfection other nationalities can acheive while i struggle with pigeon french........)
