I've got my engine ('73 1600 DP) disassembled and I need to ask you guys what you will think is a dumb question. My alternator is still attached to the fan shroud and I don't know how to properly remove it. I would imagine the 36mm bolt on the fan needs to come out, but I'd rather get some advice before I take it off. If this had already been discussed here, just direct me toward that thread (and I'll go away!). You guys are great, I'm a long time lurker here. I'm just getting up the guts to attempt a rebuild.

Alternator Removal
Hi,
Depending on what you intend to do w/ the rebuild, the big 36mm nut may or may not have to come off. If you aren't planning on rebuilding the alternator itself, you can leave it attached to the fan and backing plate and save yourself a few loose pieces. Look around the edges of the backing plate that the alt. is bolted to, you will see four 10mm bolts, one at each corner. once you remove them the alternator and fan will pull right out, it's removing them that'll drive you crazy...the bottom two, especially, have been known to cause much swearing. the best way i have found is to get the longest 10mm wrench you can find and have at it. I hope you have small hands. once they're all out, the alternator is loose, and can be removed, assuming you have room. It will not be a problem if you have the fan shroud off of the engine. if you don't, the intake manifold has to be off, and if i recall i think the alternator stand gets in the way too when you leave the fan attached. The intake is simple enough, just loosen the clamps that hold the boots, and you can slide the center section out. YOu can also just unbolt the DP end castings and it all comes off just as easily. The alt. stand, as you can see, is held w/ four 13mm bolts.
To remove the fan from the alt, if you need to, is pretty simple. just remove the big 36mm nut. there is a wavy washer under it, as well as some shims on the other side of the backing plate. these keep the fan from rubbing on the shroud, so be sure to put them back on when that time comes. you will save yourself a good deal of time and muscle if you take off the decklid, take off the carburetor and then take the whole fanshroud off.
