I have an engine that was just pulled from a Beetle. It supposedly has a big bore kit of unknown size, and a cam of unknown size (all done by a PO prior to it's current owner). It was running at the time it came out of the vehicle, and it currently turns over without any binding. The only problems it had were the inability to pass emissions (probably due to poor valve sealing the owner surmised), and it had broken a rocker retaining clip and hammered a valve stem and retainer. The retainer was replaced, and the valve stem wasn't smacked too bad (I removed the valve cover and had a look); The engine ran fine without problems for a couple years after the wayward rocker arm was addressed.
So here are my questions:
I would like to replace the heads because of the emissions and use a solid rocker shaft to eliminate the wayward rockers, and new ported heads would increase flow enough to mount 40IDFs. Sound reasonable?
Without splitting the case, can I ascertain the type/size/lift of the cam?
I assume once the old heads are removed, I can measure the ID of the cylinders and the OD of the pistons to ascertain the size of the kit installed...then I can get properly cut heads to match. Sound reasonable?
I got this engine for free, and would like to use it temporarily in my driver while I totally rebuild it's current engine (it is in dire need of it).
Thanks in advance,
Jesse

Engine with unknown innards
i can't quite rember but i (think) my engle 110 was stamped engle 110 on the oil pump end. so go some were that sells cams and look at a few if so pull the pump and take a look.but you should completly strip the motor and get the whole lot checked over. so do it right now or you may live to regret it. if i goes bang on the motorway (freeway)which it may do whith a new top end.more compresion ect ect.
