O.K. , here's one for the books : a 196? Baja Bug with swing axle trans and an AE case twin port , the starter gear doesn't mesh deep enough with the ring gear on the flywheel , RADIALLY speaking . iit goes in far enough but then the teeth only overlap about 1/8" ~ of course it them slips . I tried putting in an auto-stick (self supported) starte thinking the bushing in the bell housing had gone bad - still no joy . this thing has eaten up several starters and has me scratching my head . I now have instsalled another tranny out of a junker , same old starter , same engine and it works great . what is wrong with the tranny ? bell housing fits perfectly , no accident damage / cracks I could find .
Ideas , Please ?

Odd Starter/Tranny Problem
196? could be a 6v flywheel and that would cause the problem if you are using a 12v starter. Vic http://www.1800vw.com
