Hey Guys!
Ive been in the cargame for 20 odd years, and all of a sudden a beetle turned up in my collection..
Its a 64 with an original 1200, and as you all know 1200 isnt all that much bang... So decided to upgrade in the enginebay.. But f..k there´s many choices.
Hoping maybe there´s som good tips to get here. I feel no need to learn things the hard way.
WHAT I WANT: I want somewhere in the 100-140HP range.
- I dont wanna do rebuilds every winter.
- Not doing any dragracing
- Going with a 1300 trannie for lower RPM´s on the highway.
- Want to keep my heaterboxes (we need em in Norway...)
WHAT I HAVE:
- 1600DP case.
- 40 IDF Dellortos
- 110 Engle Cam
- Empi GT exhaust
- 1915 pistons and barrels
- Otherwise a lot of stock bits n bobs.
Should i go for:
- bigger valves?
- Fancy ignition (123 app)
- Ratio rockers
- Major head work.
- Which compression to with
Kinda overwhelmed here...

Cheapest hp is forced induction in my opinion whether it be supercharged or turbo. If your handy at fabrication than building the bolt on bits aren't too difficult. There's a few people making reliable hp with a turbo and pretty much stock 1600.
As far as heat goes I'm a huge fan of the Chinese diesel heaters, I have a couple of them and one in my 66 and it works great. Then you don't have to worry about sacrificing exhaust flow for heat.
If your trying to work with what you have I'd say use the cam and p/c's, get your case machined and a nice set of heads with at least 40x35 valves. A lot of your power will come from head flow but everything has to work in harmony. I usually set the compression to what the cam calls for and run a tighter deck if possible.
As far as heads I've had really good luck with aa performance heads and work them over a little cleaning up the ports and combustion chamber ect... you can order them with a certain cc once you get your deck height and compression ratio figured out.
Hopefully that helps a little
