I do recall it was quite a saga ;-)
I would probably go with a 090 automatic with Audi guts, posi, tweaked converter.
With the right parts they are good for stout V8 HP, and not insanely expensive, and basically bolts on a rear engined vehicle and a T4.
(far less than a kidney)

If I could figure out the mods to flip the diff I'd stick one in my 914.
(hydraulically its trivial, requires manual shift valve body, mechanically the bolt holes or bolts need to move)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I am not fond of that arrangement and neither was Porsche when they made the 912e. I think I am going to try using the 912e clutch arrangement but on a 915. Maybe try using a 225mm 915 clutch on a 228mm bus flywheel and pressure plate ...it will probably be a very frankenstein setup.

This is a very interesting way of converting pull to push though ... uses VW parts:

The trans I have is a 915/63 from an 83 911SC which has an aluminum case, 8:31 final drive and ZF LSD for straight burnouts :D

G50 may be different for sure. Thought that a 914 FW would fit the 901 transmission. Man, a nice 912 outlaw with a stroked 914 motor would be a lovely thing to drive daily for sure.

...still from memory, the 915 bell housing is ~19mm deeper, thus the need for the adapter flywheel and the pressure plate with a ring gear...
but it may vary by year.

Now I am trying to figure out the clutch setup with the type 4 and the 915 transmission, Type 4 has a push throw out bearing and the 915 has a pull throw out bearing ... trying to convert pull to push
Hi,
A friend of mine turned the type 4 flywheel and converted to Porsche 915 style flywheel
He explained to me that it was not so difficult on a big lathe.
Now he was using everything clutch related from 915

I ended up finding a 923 from a 912E when i did my Fastback build.
It's 914 pp and flywheel, but uses i's own case, throw-out, and arm.
When looking for one of these rare beasts i found several empty cases, and cheap, too.
Because the 912E used the close ratio gearsets they were very often cannibalized.
With some luck, you could find a case to install your guts.

Pretty sure bug@5-speed still makes pull/push conversion parts:
I used their nosecone/mount/shifter.
https://www.bott-parts.de/getriebe/?p=1

Couple of things about the 915 conversion.
First, be prepared for some -very- tall gearing.
Around town, it requires a lot of attention in stop/go traffic.
While those close tall ratios are great when you have room to run,

Be sure when fabricating your linkage you test and re-test.
Same with the shifter.
Next time I'd fab the tunnel to use a factory shifter vs. running the Bug@5-speed shifter.

Porsche balking ring synchros suck.
They're slow and clumsy.
There's good reason nobody uses them anymore, even Porsche,
And everyone loves the G50...
Speedier than a Fasting Bullet!
