Porta-Tool line bore

Post by V8Nate »

Hi everybody, over the last couple years I have bought a couple used porta tool line bore kits off of ebay which neither were complete but I now have 4 bars w/cutters, 2 hand cranks which I think are for cutting the thrust surface(which I still haven't done yet) 2 hydraulic feeds, 2 sets of bushings and finally put it to work. It was missing the micrometer which was a drag, but I ended up making one on my 3d printer and cut up a micrometer and using that on the part I printed to set the cutters. I found some instructions on thesamba I believe which helped out.

The model I have is the older unit with a hydraulic feed that is secured with a bracket vs the later style that is built into the rear bushing. I know the majority of people that line bore at home prefer the truline over the porta-tool but I think it's a really cool old tool!

So after reading all I could find on the tool and looking up some videos I decided to make a video myself on how to use it. It takes some time to set up the cutters but if you take your time it works really well and has a nice finish in the bearing saddles. I'll put a link to the video down below and a few pictures to go with it.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!
Nate

Really nice. I remember when they first came out. No feed system. Was tough to use, but worked.

Thank you for posting the great video. I have searched for videos on this before with no results. Also, thank you for the 'hands on' explanation of how it is used.

V8Nate,

I'm new to the forum because I stumbled upon this post.

Thanks for posting about your Porta tool. I enjoyed the video.

As I am a machinist that likes automotive repair I am interested in how the hydraulic feeder works. Seems like a great invention.
I was able to find patent # 3,331,266 that had some information.

You post says there are two different types of feed tools. Can you post some more pictures of the feed tools?

Thanks Bill

Hey Bill welcome and thanks for watching. The hydraulic feed is a pretty cool part of the kit, I'm not quite sure exactly how they work although I kind of have an idea. To engage the hydraulic feed you tighten the knob on the shaft and your off to work:)ImageImageImageImage

Cool, Thanks for the reply. I'll do more research thru the patents. I'll also keep an eye out for one for sale. Thanks again and Good day.
