Please help me

Post by AdrianJensen »

I've been considering different options for replacement cylinder sets for my 1800. Specifically, I'm intrigued by the 96mm slip-in cylinders as they offer a potential increase in displacement. There's quite an array of choices available, and one option that caught my attention is the biral cylinders – featuring an iron bore with an attached cast aluminum fin set. I'm curious to hear about your experiences with these cylinders. Do they actually contribute to better cooling? Additionally, I'm debating whether the 96mm slip-in cylinders are a practical choice or merely a gimmick. Your insights would be greatly appreciated.

I've been using AA 96mm Biral cylinders for a few years now in a 2,316cc (80mm stroke) with no problems whatsoever. The fins are not 'attached', the cylinders are double cast, iron inner and aluminium outer. They were spot on dimensionally, fitted perfectly and the engine pushes a Westy up mountains without any overheating. Not sure what you mean by 96mm cylinders being a gimmick, they fit without any machining being required, just like any other Type 4 cylinder. Of course there are disadvantages, obviously the cylinder/head sealing face is narrower and the skirt is thinner then standard.

96mm t4 jugs are basically mainstream--- nowhere near like Type 1 92s or slip in 88s.
The stock t4 1.8/2L head register is 105mm so the seal surface and cylinder wall thickness are fine.
(just buy from a reputable vendor, measure everything, and pay extra for QC if that is an option.)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
