Report from the southern Oregon Dunes

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

I forgot to mention, there are a lot of houses by the dunes now being purchased to be converted into rentals for potential dune riders. The number is getting "nutsy Fagen" too but one of the things also GNU is food trucks now coming into the areas where there are a lot of rental places. Some of the are... WOW when it comes to different foods.

Again, for what it is worth.

Heading to the dunes for a few days.

If you are going down the Oregon coast via. HWY 101 watch your speed and other proper things as the word is that it is going to be watched closely by those who's job it is to do so.

The sun is out and blue skys. The wind is blowing but not enough to be a problem. The weekend crowd is coming in and heading out on the dunes..

I did hear something weird as it sounded like an electric motor with an old sound to it. Talked to someone who saw it and it looked like an old rig which may have had some kind of electric motor added. I have heard that some electric rigs are being made currently l but not sure if they are being sold or it was a trial thing or just my imagination.

I was helping out at a D38 motorcycle desert race a few months ago. Bikes were cruising through the pits to head out and do some bomb run practice. Two stroke braaap and four stroke thump sounds abound. Then a guy rides silently by. Took me by surprise. The company that now produces the iconic Myers Manx now markets an electric version. https://meyersmanx.com/pages/manx-2-0-ev

The sun is out, the wind is down, light blue sky with some clouds in the sky and most of the camping areas are pretty full. Still seeing rigs on trailers or in the back of trucks.

Just got back from the dunes. Smoke from the forest fires just north of the North Bend area. Overcast through much of Oregon north of the fire area then south of Salem ending up with a changing temperature ranging from 94 to 98 degrees.

Most of the camping areas had cleared out but then were starting to fill up with the next bunch.

Down at the dunes right now. I haven't been out on them yet but others in the group (family) who have been out and from what they say... it is busy out there but... not as noisy is it usually is.

Had smoke from the Oregon fires, sun, rain sprinkles all within the same time period all visiting in roughly the same time period.

One family of the group traded in their expensive toy in for a newer expensive toy but they are very happy with the differences between the two rigs.

I am going to try to get the blue buggy on the dunes, not for long but a trip for the trip. I have to change the oil but the brand of oil I was using is not the same oil being used but still out there with a new mix. I haven't had good luck with the stuff the new owner of the brand's name so I am going to have to come up with a good and filter mix.

My VW engine block had been "full flowed" so things are different that way. I did some other mods also changing things. The oil filter is still being make but depending on who you talk to it is either good or bad. Sounds like the same argument that went on back in the early/mid-60s for the same filter manufacturer. Their old filter wasn't that good so they did change the design and it seemed to be OK. Got to get some un-biased knowledge from someone.

I did find out that the brake problem was that the brakes were done wrong. My disc brakes are dual slave cylinder per wheel but only the bottom drain was used so the upper cylinder was emptied. Working good now.

It's been raining off and, on all day, so far. The smoke from the fires here in Oregon is fairly heavy also.

Not hearing much noise today. Also, yesterday it was fairly dangerous on the dunes as some of the people out there are going really fast from what I was told.

The rain finally stopped but for how long? Still thickly overcast so this may not be over.

The smoke is still in the air, the misty rain did get some smoke out but where the fires are, but did they get wet enough and over a wide enough area.

Its raining like crazy right now. Its not a big drop "heavy" rain but smaller drops that don't have dry spots between the drops. The kind of rain that you get wet inside just looking and thinking about it   .

The sun is now showing some gumption but for how long I don't know. Even the crows are starting to fly now but again, for how long.

The dunes are quiet!

It is still lightly overcast but the sun is trying to burn through. A lot of rain the last few days so the sand is more packed than usual. I think I heard is that this is going to go on for a few more days.

I buy Wix or Motorcraft filters and avoid the F brand.

It sounds like you are talking about Oil filters not sand.

Back in the late 50's or early '60s or so the "F" brand I think you are talking about did have problems (I was a "supposed mechanic" at the time) with their basic "canister" design failing as oil pressures went up for several reasons. They did a redesign and the filter problems stopped but not the "baggage". I seem to remember the Wix name also and I think there were similar problems too as well as with a lot of other brands.

I remember sitting at the launch/burnout and the finish line of the drag strip seeing filters letting go.

On the dunes I have heard of filter problems, but I don't remember seeing any markings on the sand with the problem. But, there were some really bad messy things happen that one gets to see when the rigs are hauled or drug back to the parking area such are rollovers and flips.

Most filter (et al) designs for vehicles are not well designed for abuse we put them though. Recently I asked a VW machining shop owner (now retired) about this and which oil to use (the brand I used was bought out by a brand across the "Atlantic" and it now not of the same oil base as it was. The purchasing company is not one I advise because of the problems I had with using the brand. His opinion was that just go to the auto store and get what you need as things are different than they were.

Again, this is an opinion and I have had other's opinions fail before too so... for what it is worth.

On my computer my posts all are numbered #17612. Not sure who number #563 is and couldn't find it in a short check of this string.
