Ghia 2276 Turbo EFI dream build
This thing is a dream build!! Some times a nightmare, but it’s not going anywhere so this will be a long running thread.
So I sold the Baja last September and I have been fighting tooth and nail to get some thing built to get back on the road.
Part of this is not going to relate to Turbo / EFI things but please bear with me as that’s the direction I am gonna go.
First things first I should explain the sale of the Baja while that car will always hold a special place in my heart, after building it and getting more into the VW scene Karmann Ghias stole my heart. That said I have had my eye out to find one. I came across a deal that while the car is in bad shape I got it for a steal so worth it.
Here she is as I found her.
I had time to order parts like the half floor pan that I needed before I had the car in a place to work on it. Here was the pan replacement.
Before:
After:
This is a small hood over for 4/5 years till I can due a true pan restoration.
I am putting together a pretty healthy engine combo for this thing and will lay that out in the coming posts.
Thanks for reading

I can’t wait to see it come together also!!
I should lay out what I am planning for this thing engine wise.
I scored a few deals on parts that I thought I couldn’t pass on. Maybe I did really good maybe I didn’t.
I got a deal on AA pistons, an 82mm EMPI crank and some I beam rods, though I only got three rods. Ended up getting a set of EMPI H beams.
With that settled I needed to find a block as I was looking months ago there where none to be found. At a local VW shop I heard a story of an aluminum block with a stuck oil piston. I low balled the owner and walked out with the case. Ended up having to drill a hole drive the piston out, then hand lapped the plunger bore and re welded the case.
Heads where are a set of autolina 40mm 37 mm heads with a mild port, and dual valve springs still a round port so nothing crazy. Had the heads opened up to 94mm so no huge issues though the chambers where a bit small at 52cc. I ended up with a fair amount of deck at .090 and used a .5 copper head gasket.
Last major part of the engine is camshaft, I had a TCS-20 laying around and some 1:25 rockers so that’s where I am going. I know that it’s a smaller cam and not the direction most have or do go these days but…. I think it’ll work worst case I change it in a few years. Also I want a torquey driver and there have been some very fast guys with that cam.
I have some 44mm CB performance throttle bodies so those will get some injectors that I haven’t bought yet, I have 550cc injectors installed but…. Not sure they will make the power I am looking for.

Re: Ghia 2276 Turbo EFI dream build
I haven't updated in a while sorry a deployment, multi-state move and life are all things keeping the Ghia low on the priority list. Not that I don't get work done on it just not as much as or as fast as I would like.
I left off so the 2276 is together and hanging in the car, attached to street prepped IRS transmission with a 3.88 final drive should allow the turbo to load nicely.
While I was fitting the engine I also made the rear clip removable so that I can drop the engine pretty quick. May not have been needed but I had fun.
Deployment also afforded me some cash and a lot of parts shopping time so I ordered up some used gauges need to install them but pulled the inspiration from below, a 914 tach and a super beetle speedometer gives me a very simple lay out that is clean and functional!
I also bought a first generation ms3 pro to compliment the micro squirt that I have wired up. Now that I am back in the mid-west winter gives me a great opportunity to wire in the new ECU and finalize the hot and cold plumbing. I am hoping to get this thing fired and broke in around the new year.
I leave you with the shot of the Ghia "tucked" into its new home, like any good project its a shelf and holding the garage floor down like a champ!

Hey Schweg ,First off, Thanks for your Service!, Yes the 3:88 trans does 'Load' the turbo
But why no deep sump?,, you got to feed them Rod Bearings unless u keep the RPM's below 5k ,and that's no fun
Cheers,Mike

Mike,
I do have one, just not in that photo. I’m realizing that I didn’t get enough pictures or documentation done so I was trying to catch up to where I am.
I don’t have power in my new garage so any work I get done at night involves head lamps so on top of being bad about photos adding darkness doesn’t help that at all.
Most of my oil lines should be in this week so maybe a shot of the sump is warranted.

Re: Ghia 2276 Turbo EFI dream build
I cannot compete with the quality of builds on here but here goes.
So I left off with an engine exhaust hot and cold side that needed all the work finished up.
I ended up getting a great deal on an A1 side exit header so I grabbed that, started planning out my hot side. I ended up going with a Holset HE351 turbo with an upgraded billet compressor wheel. So that is tucked into the passenger side of the engine bay with a fender exit exhaust. Turbo
Exhaust
That left me with some other issues. IE my intercooler plan went out the window. So I went ebay shopping and scooped up a air to water set up that needs the water side plumbed ie the pump the radiator and reservoir, I have all the parts but I was hoping to get it running so that is side lined for now.
So as all of that was getting test fitted over and over I have also been working through wiring up the 1st gen MS3 pro I got and making sure that was good. I had bought a distributor based timing system but ran into issues popping fuses and just fell back on the simplicity of The Dubshops solutions. I have checked injectors and coils need to set timing and reinstall the rockers check the fuel system for leaks then it should be ready for a break in run.
