An excellent idea, Bruce.
I used Swepco 201 because all of the Porschefiles sing it's praises.
Wonder if some synthetic might be in order?

I do use such a setup on a regular basis, exept it's in a mk4 tdi...

zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

It would be easy to blame my linkage..
Wanted to keep the shifter over close to the driver's side like a proper type 3.
Also needed to correct a misalignment of the shift rod in the up/down plane a bit too.
Used two mil-spec sealed steering joints - like Jake did on a 915 trans in his bus - one at the nose cone and another in the tunnel.
This meant i had to run two shift rod bushings; one at the shifter and another factory bush aft.
it all moves very tight, sweet and smoothly. FWIW. Maybe some stiction when loaded?
I always am quick to blame anything i touched first, have no doubt..
It's not that it's hard to shift in that it takes effort to move the shifter,
It's just super vague where 3rd gear is between 1st and 5th..
Or where 4th is when coming down from 5th.. It's like it's nowhere to be found.

I had a 915 equipped 911SC for a short while. Having never driven any other cars, I thought there must be something wrong with the trans, that it must have been worn out. The shifting was really vague. It also could not be speed shifted like a VW.
When I went to sell it, one of the guys that test drove it made a comment about how great the trans in my car was, that it was so much better than other cars he looked at.
The car was really slow, even though the engine ran good. The leakdown test was good. It was a mystery to me why it was so low on power. Then I read the test results from its year in R&T or C&D. It was mid 16s in the quarter, so there was nothing wrong with my car, they are just SLOW. I had way more fun driving my Beetle, so I dumped that car fast.
It wasn't until 1987 that Porsche finally gave up on their own design crappy synchros and switched over to the Borg Warner synchros that all other cars use. Including VW.
This is why I think it is foolish to install an old Porsche 5 speed in a VW. It takes a ton of work and the results are worse than stock.
If you are willing to do that much work, start with a late model trans from a Subaru and install the conversion R&P. If you get a trans new enough, (after about 06-08) you will get the latest dual cone synchros on 1st thru 3rd gears. Also, a synchro on reverse! The only downside is that the Subaru trans is about 20-30lbs heavier. I bet a 915 trans is about the same, so the point is moot.
