OK this is just ridiculous

Post by Jadewombat »

The quality of stuff has completely gone out the window. In the past 2 weeks, I got a fountain pump from the Amazons which didn't even spit out half of its claimed 160gph, a clip on desk fan for my attic (also from AMZ) that didn't even last 1 day before the shaft disengaged from the motor and the below came up yesterday.

I sell a few things on Etsy here and there and I did some table signs for a local restaurant chain this year. I need to make 1 more. I went to Lowe's and picked up some 16 gauge sheet of steel. I cut it, set it in the press brake and it didn't bend, IT SHEARED OFF COMPLETELY! Never seen sheet metal do that.

One of the things that isn't usually let known is the standard(s) a material is made to (the materials originating company for example if it is not mixed to one of the international, US or Military standards for example). If you look up AL (aluminum) for example there are many standards just in ANSI standards much less ISO standards et al to manufacture to and the reasons for that particular materials design reasons. The problem is getting worse and worse based on what I am seeing/hearing about now vs. what I worked with before I retired.

If one builds to a known standard the test of the materials are usually mandatory as part of the delivery. It is the same problem with flat, round or square/rectangular stock, fasteners and other shapes and sizes. Thing world wide are sure going down hill fast and I am not shocked over it either... just disappointed. When I was working I got to see some of the initiating reasons on how some of this problems got started.

A deep score like from a scratch awl will do that if you bend it in the same place.

That also can cause a failure as you are dam(n)aging the material's strength especially if it is a thinner material.

It sounds like the specs for the manufacturing of the material and/or the temper are not being checked or built to which can happen to both local and off-shore purchases.

As I remember the test data is supposed to be delivered at the same time the material arrives at the seller.
