Could this engine block take 4.5 psi of boost?

With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

How much boost could it take?

Could this engine block take 4.5 psi of boost?

Post by Skodawaggarn »

Hello! This is my first post here. I have an old Skoda Fabia 1.2 l (vw engine: azq) and I'm thinking of giving it a modest boost with the amr500 supercharger but I am unsure how much it can take as I'm not sure it's ever been done before. Judging from the pictures of the block and con rods, how much do you think would be reasonable? What is the maximum it could take? Do I have to reinforce it, etc?

Feel free to vote and elaborate!

It looks like it can take double that and then some  nice thick cylinder walls and a rod with some 'meat' on it , check out a stock 1600 air cooled rod  some of these 'Nut' on here are boosting to 30+ pounds

Thanks for the reply man! Yeah those look much weaker indeed. 😳 Awesome that people run those kind of pressures! Will def be checking some of that out. For my car then I guess other things than the engine itself would be the limiting factor... Good to know!

It should hold, how ever your tuning both fuel and ignition will be critical if your running high boost.

That would be a lot of work for not much gain. Tuned well, every 15 psi of boost doubles the hp. So at 4.5 psi your only going to gain 1/4 of the hp.

I don't know, 25-30% is a pretty good increase for a few hundred dollars. If I were to boost it up a lot I would probably have to change clutch, gearbox, driveshafts, diff, injectors, fuel pump, etc. That would be crazy expensive, so low-blowing it is not so bad for me I think.

For sure! Though I've seen some people just slap on a 1:1 fuel pressure regulator and use the stock tune for low boost. What do you think about that? Is it feasible?

Sure it’s feasible. Though as mentioned the gains your looking for may not be there with lower boost, and boost is super addictive.
