BOSCH 044 Fuel Pump Issues

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

BOSCH 044 Fuel Pump Issues

Post by CentralWAbaja »

Rather then cluttering up Leathers Honda thread I figured I would start a new one on this topic. I kinda poked fun at myself for how buried my fuel pumps are. About a year ago we were noting things getting more and more fumes inside the car. I finally started to think that i had a leak....

I found at the time what I thought was a fitting that had a drip. Of course the only fitting in the entire system that leaks is the one buried behind the fuel cell. I tightened it up and cleaned things up and has seemed better.

Yesterday the wife and I were noticing the fumes again. So I pulled the floor so I could pull the seats so I could pull the fuel cell yes ok to make fun of me here. I was surely cussing at myself.

Oh there they are!!!

So tightened the fittings and then tested. At first it seems good. So I cleaned things up a bit. Tested again and it seemed as though the wire terminal kept getting wet. Not really dripping but could watch the negative wire turn wet.WTF? So I disconnect the terminal ring and just jumper a wire so that the pump would run and BINGO there is a drip.

Yes pushing out the terminal. Really? Yes. So I hit the web to see if this is something anybody has heard of and the first thing that pops up is this YouTube video of how to spot a fake Bosch 044 pump

You guessed it... I have 2 imposters. Oh goodie, looks like 2 new genuine Bosch pumps will be in my future.

I wonder if the insulators on the posts being too tall caused the posts to pull some causing the leak???

Good that you found it. Leaking fuel is NEVER a good thing...  It would be a real bummer to go through this work to have to tear it apart again or worse have the leak still cause a fire.

Great info CWB, being able to sell knockoff components that could harm or worse kill a person really upsets me.

If you watch the video he shows what to look for, one of the problems is the + & - posts, they are recessed some. Just my opinion they get pulled out a little bounced a little and then you start to have leaks. Almost all of the item he listed were lack of quality items, that and inspection marks the knockoffs don’t have. Sorry you were taken, glad you found it before something bad happened. Real good info, thank you for posting this.

There was another video on the topic that followed the one CWB posted. Didn't show the detail as well but brought up the fact that only large suppliers get to be Bosch dealers and Bosch doesn't manufacture parts for other suppliers. So, if someone says Bosch makes their parts for them, time to walk away. Only buy Bosch parts from major suppliers and avoid ebay and your chances of getting taken are much less. It would be really hard to see these details when buying online. Sending it back once you get it and inspect it is a pain. I can just imagine the reason for return- you sold me counterfeit parts  They're probably not going to be happy about that. CWB do you remember where you bought the pumps?

No, and I went through the file of receipts yesterday. It was like a trip down memory lane  Honestly I was sharing this all via text with Leatherneck as he has a lot of my old parts on his car, fuel cell, brakes, spindles, ect. I reached out to see if I could interest him in a deal on a couple slightly used fuel pumps  Seriously I knew he had recently been asking fuel pump questions here and wanted to share what I had learned before he went to far. Fortunately for him his pump looks to pass the visuals outlined in that video.

CWB are you going to take t apart and see why it leaked. I saw one video it was similar pump but not Bosch that he pulled apart. Didn’t get into how they tick though.

No I did not even mark the one that was leaking. Pulled all the parts off and decided that they were junk. Now that they are clean I night try and hook them up and save the non leaker as a spare and do some investigation on the other. I will report back if I do.

So that leads to question if that opinion is based on failure of counterfeit pumps or genuine pumps. At $150 not sure what else out there is in that range. Or lower or higher?

I remember the guy who sold me my motor package saying he had issues with the Bosch pumps so he would supply a generic Car Quest pump with his motors. Learning what I did this weekend makes me wonder if his opinion was also based on bad experiences with knock off pumps?

I run a Walbro inline fuel pump in the Redhead no issues. Picked mine up from Summit Racing
