Devastator's upgrade

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

The front of my sandrail is 500 lbs with 2 people riding in it. Wheelies are super easy to do with 200+ ft/lbs of torque. I haven't broken anything yet them and hope the trend continues.

Once I hit the rear engine cage, my forward momentum ceased. That's a recipe for going over backwards on the top of a hill, so I backed out of the throttle as soon as I felt it drag. Besides that, I couldn't see where I was going nor steer it if I could have.

I got a good deal on some 2.5 bypass shocks. Anyone know of a problem with using them instead of 2.0's, (like the rest of my shocks)?

Back at work now from my week long trip to the dunes, and I DROVE it back on the trailer. WOOHOO! Learned a little about adjusting bypass shocks, but, CLEARLY have a LOT to learn still. Moving the lower shock mounts made a HUGE difference. Adding bump stops was a super improvement and I didn't bottom out a single time. In fact, I still had 1/4" of the bump stops left before full compression at my worst G-out. Running 125 PSI in the bumps and will increase it to 150 PSI before next trip.

Now, I'm finally going to better address my fuel sloshing and bouncing problem with this:

Great to hear it is becoming a lot more fun to drive, crazy how far you and others have come from our original builds to now. Keep it up and don't stop posting here.

I saw a pic a few days ago, of my sandrail back in 1990, shrotly after it was first built. WOW, what a change!

The "tank" part of my fuel reservoir and the Holley Hydramat. For scale; the outside length of the tank is just under 9" long. Now to make the lid.

Here's the lid with the Hydramat attached and an assembly pic, minus the screws, hose fittings, and gasket.
