<B>david,

it makes sense, except i don't recall if the relay should have any power at it at all with the key in the OFF position. you may have a short to ground somewhere. all the FI components use ground as the switched side, i believe.

I was told that the fatter red wire that goes into the relay comes from the (I think Starter) and is always hot.

In the Bentley, it refers to checking that the relay is getting power with the key off. (ground is terminal 85, both 88y and 88z should have power to them with key off.) Mine did.

Turning on the key should tell the relay to close the circuits and let the FI stuff run, AFAIK.

I didn't have time/opportunity to perform any of the other tests to the double relay in Bentley. (Plus I already had other evidence it was bad--fuel pump running.)

BTW, I called that salvage yard today. Both beetles had their engines removed. I'm hoping that the double relay is still there. Checking friday afternoon.

Thanks

david,

i stand corrected about the power to the relay. sounds like you are close to figuring it out.

I just bought some tune up parts too--
new cap, rotor, and points (spark plugs replaced last week)
Fuel and air filters are coming tomorrow, I'll put it all in saturday.

I'm really hoping that that bug will have the double relay I need!

Well, here's an update:

I did find the relay in the beetle, everything else FI related was gone, but somehow, this thing was under the passenger seat.

I also replaced the air-flow meter in the airbox. Mine was bad.

I also replaced the points, cap, rotor, fuel and air filters.

Still nothing. (actually, I haven't tried it after the fuel filter.) I dumped a load of gas all over me and the ground. I've got a fan on it under the bus to help evaporate all that gasoline. But the old filter really didn't seem that bad when I got it out.

I haven't been able to check whether or not the injectors are getting 12v or not. I forgot my test light, but I think I can get another.

Does the engine have to be running for me do check that, or can I just be having someone crank it?

Anyone with any other ideas?

Double check that the white wire is on term. #1 and the black wire is on term.#15 at the coil

DING DING DING DING!!!!

You win! That was the probem!

When I bought this bus, the seller told me that he stopped driving it four years ago when one day it wouldn't start.

He told me that prior to this, his girlfriend's ex had bragged about how he could make anything not run because he was in the military and learned how, or something like that. Well, he was pretty clever. He switched those two wires, but not the one for the heater fan and the other one. He even wrapped the white wire around something, so it wouldn't look like it could go farther. Matter of fact, because of this, I thought you were crazy and carefully studied my Bentley before switching them back. But I did and it worked!

This isn't the only thing I have to do to make Bear driveable. I'm gonna have to bleed the brakes, (They were pretty mushy) and probably work on really getting the timing and points adjusted dead on. I could only eyeball the points, cause my feeler gauge is at my apartment an hour away.

But, I was able to have Bear move on his own power! (drove it forward, backed it up, and parked it facing the other direction.) I wonder if my folks will notice in the morning...

Thanks!

I'm not crazy......It's the rest of the world. As far as the point gap, you can use a matchbook. One flap is close enough for points (.017), and when you double that by folding it in half, (.034) it works for your plugs. Happy trails

That's a good trick. I know mine are open more than that. It should at least get me closer. Thanks
