Turbo upgrade 1915cc to 2276cc

Post by Aussie Rob »

Hi guys this is my first post on the forum which means I'm desperate for your expert advice.
I've been into hot street vw's for over 20 years but only NA engines until somewhat recently.
My last build was an AJ Sims T1600 Turbo kit 1915cc under deck lid kit ....All good but I want to build a 2276cc but the original t3 turbo is too small to run any moderate boost efficiently.
The turbo specs t3 .42/.48 45 trim. I plotted the compressor map based on a 2276cc @15psi boost.

I'm hoping to reuse my 1 3/8 headers and 2 1/2" open exhaust using a 350 Holley boost referenced locked out disy etc.
My heads atm are aj turbo prep 40x35.5 and cam 256°@50" and .525 lift
What I really want is 2276cc
Max 250hp @5500rpm
Max boost 15psi
I know my exhaust will limit the exhaust flow as I read in turbomania restrict a 2 litre plus motor over 5500rpm.
This is only a street motor and I'm wanting max hp and torque at low revs .
I have a Mallory hi-fire i boost/retard ignition and will be using e85 petrol all to help with heat and detonation.
My question is .....what turbo would best suit my engine combo keeping in mind my above wishes.
From my best calculations a t3 super 60 would be good but please let me know if you have any better / suitable turbo in mind.

Hey Rob, super 60 would be the cat's meow, but anything around t3t4 hybred A/r .58/.60 ,I grabbed a .57/50 trim off flea-bay and it does the job on my 2276 ,, and they have a crap load of 57-.63's that will work too

Hi Mike are the flea bay turbos any good? I'm just concerned about the Chinese made turbos no being well made.I have seen many of the t3/t4 turbos.
Do you think from your knowledge of turbos my exhaust will work fine for the rpm range I'm chasing ?

I'm open to advice on this as well Mike....lol
I contacted AJ and he said a 500cfm or a 675cfm would suit my build.
The exhaust is workable the new turbo specs are good now just to get the fuel delivery right ...
How does your 670 carb drive Like off boost?
Mines a weekend toy so a bit of cantankerous deliverability is ok....
Rodney Adams sells e85 efi units fitech and holley ..I'm leaning towards running straight e85 considering I want to run high boost levels ....it's always a cost issue vs my wife lol

Now that's a cool picture from inside your bug!
I notice your shift point is set just after 8k!......do you really take it that high? You must be making some big hp at those revs.
Can you suggest anyone for a good carb set up like yours or would AJ and RAD be the best people to turn to?

Thanks Rob, I shift it any where from 5-8000 ,,, depends on what the other car IS(Mustang/vette/ viper ect.) that's trying to pass me
really no time to look at the tach
I do my own carb mods ,, boost referenced the Power valve, not hard to do
you do have a dremel and a drill? and some JB weld  I found how to do this 'on -line' :lol
E85 your gonna need a big fuel tank,,,I Look at it this way: ya really don't need big boost #'s with a stroker 2276cc 8-12 lbs,, on pump gas they will spank everything but a Bugatti Veyron, but I haven't raced one of them so I'm just speculating
I too own a 1915cc Turbo but it's in a sandRail now days,, but when I had it in the white bug it was a blast,it ran a 13,02 @ 104 mph in the 1/4 with 3 cracked cylinders and a small 40 doce. then I built the 2276 and WOW  8)
