Oil temps

Post by Amurray »

So I drove my car to Daytona today. I'm wondering what is the proper oils temps using Competition Eliminators on the street? Car is running great, head temps are just at or under 300° while cruising on the interstate. She sounds like a V8. I'm going to make a few changes over the holidays......wrap my exhaust and switch to a MST Serpentine belt/pulley.

It was 220° that was only because I took the interstate. As soon as I let off the gas the temps dropped to 200°.

Yup, if I'm seeing those temps or above I'll just make sure I have a good synthetic oil in it and call it good. Mine has gone 230 or so cruising on the interstate for 50 miles at 70+mph on 100°F days. It seems to peak and hold there though, once I slow down and cruise in the city temps will come right down. I'm sure I could add some ducting and get those temps to drop while at speed. Is your exhaust stainless?

I'm not sure about the header portion (Marty Stagg built) but the part after the turbo is all stainless.

Where are you monitoring your oil temps from? My ECU monitors from the oil temps from the sump.

Ecu sees temp at the sump as well. Pros and cons to this i suppose. It sees the temp after the oil has done all of its work, rather than what is actually going to the bearings. Probably a worst case kind of reading at that location. But it was easy to setup.

Hope your running a welded fan if ur getting a serpentine belt system? your real good on the head temp's @ less then 300* I added 3 oil coolers on my bug: 72 plate over the trans w/fan ,
finned tube type in/out over the fan shroud(see pic)
and oil cooled intake manifold from Ron Lummus( sorry pic )before i added it

Yes, I will have an MST serpentine belt soon. The V-belt either flips or comes off so I'm done. Does the serpentine belt system turn the fan faster? I have a Berg welded fan but no dog house anymore. I had the DTM fan shroud(don't believe the hype :| ) and type 4 cooler. Now I only run the dual setrab oil cooler without stock dog house.

Serpentines don't slip like v-belts do. There is probably a reason your belts keep rolling and coming off. It would be best to sort that first.
