Hi guys.
I want to bench start a type 4 with a 228 flywheel. I'm thinking of using a cut down bug bell housing. Just the starter motor mount .
So to clarify.
I have a 1600 bug bell housing. gunna cut it at 9 0clock and a 12 oclock position and use that with the type 25 starter. or perhaps a regular bug starter.
Will this work. Thanks
bench start Idea.

I built this many years ago. You might (or may not) find some useful information here.

I would leave the bell intact at least for the beginning, at the most I would only cut down this far like;

Is your donor 12V? the same rules will apply to any conversion about depth and bushing but if you leave the pressure plate off during the test you may only need to clearance for the teeth.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Yes a 12v b housing.
So, I've copied sideshows pic and cut in half the bellhousing. bolted it on ,turned over the engine by hand and the fly doesn't catch on the starter mount. So that's good.
Gunna fit a 1600 starter to it and hope it will mesh ok with the fly wheel.
If all good I'll Prime the oil. Think I read on here a while back that Jake used to leave the oil filter empty. Is this still the best idea. I have fitted the filter empty and not gone mad on tightening it down so I can IF needed remove it and check that the filter is filling with oil.
Going to wire in an oil light too and remove the plugs for a fast spin.
Thanks

My setup is similar, but is used on the stand.
Nice to use the stand to run-in, because it makes any maneuverings easy
(or anything wrong can be addressed right on the spot).
A fuel tank from a roto-tiller, a few gauges, a big piece of plate bent over to mount things, a throttle control that you can lock from the mower shop, starter button, battery cables, etc..
Pretty easy to drag this thing out, throw a couple of bolts in, grab a battery, gas it up and go.
Only complaint is that it will use up that whole tank of gas before the cam break-in and tuning is done.
Not that big of a deal, really..

Nice 1 Clatter.
I tried a standard 1600 starter on the 1600 bell housing mount. It would not mesh properly with the fly.
I'll need to get the starter off the type 25 and see if that works with the …..
1600 BELL HOUSING
AND THE 228MM FLY.
I really don't want to fit the motor only to find an issue which means removal of the engine.

Well the standard procedure is to use a fly wheel that fits that bell, I’ve only used OEM 210/15mm, but there is an aftermarket 200 that fits also.
So this is uncharted territory for me, but what happens if you space the starter motor forward (away from the flywheel) and is it a self supporting type?

Spacing the starter might work. ill look into that and report back.

My bell housing is from a 002 bus,
So it needed some clearancing to fit the 228 flywheel.
Make sure you check that first before you have a frustrating time trying to install..
