73 Type IV in Baja?

73 Type IV in Baja?

Post by mulewright »

I can get a rebuilt Type IV engine fairly cheap. Do I have to change to upright cooling for a Baja or is there other options to keep the fan from vacuuming the road?

they fit fine, just need a conversion flywheel, or to get the flywheel that comes with it machined. the stock fan is fine as long as it fits in your cage. a couple of folks here are running em.
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

fuser, how much more do you think the type4 weighs then a type1

mulewright, there is not alot of options for exhaust so you might have get creative with that part.

not much. and not enough to matter, people are scared of that fan housing, but it weighs less than an alternator, and when you ditch the heater boxes

dry weight
1600 264#
1700 282#

worth it imho, rock solid case, full flow, better than doghouse cooling, better flowing valves, although exhasut is debateable.

As far as the exhaust- I have a tubing bender, just need the dies. What size is the stock exhaust? I also tig and mig weld so am thinking about getting a Tee Pee exhaust and welding to converted stock manifolds.

My friend put a bone stock 2.0 with a 3 rib in his Baja. He went from "I hope I make it through this sand" to doing donuts around everyone flinging dirt all over the place. I'm sure the gearing had alot to do with that (from 4.12 RP to 5:38) but the 3 rib makes the swap very easy and cheaper in the long run (no special flywheel needed). You just need a $50 mount kit and the heart to cut the pan/body around the shifter.

Clark, you can check out my build - Chuck's Baja Build - in this forum (a little farther down the page). I have built a second Type 4 engine for the car recently. Pictures were originally with Photobucket so they are lost forever. Pictures resume about page 4 which is where I begin with the second engine. If you need to see something special let me know and I will post up what I have.
