How fast can a RAT engine move your loaf?

Post by DallasHead »

I was considering at some point in investing in one of Jake's monster bus engines. If any of you have been so lucky as to purchase, or Jake feel free to chime in, how fast can one of these engines make my hulking Westy move. I realize there are all different sizes and different weights of busses, but generally speaking. Can you squeal tires with one? Can I get up to 90+MPH considering there is no wind? Just curious as to how fast they can move?

Hiya Head,

Your performance with one of Jake's engines will be directly related to just which engine you choose. He has several "builds" for a Type 4. I talked to Jake last year about building a Type 4 from my Bus. He wants to know what you'll need in terms of performance. At that point he can suggest the best application for your needs.

By the way, be very careful with what you want. Jake can supply whatever you'll need. But you have to ask yourself seriously if you really want to go 90 mph in a bus. At that rate you may find yourself going where the winds don't blow at all!

Ya... I got an engine from Jake. I told him that I wanted a just a little something better then stock, you know, like a 1776. Something that I can putts around as a daily driver and still kick out on to the highway.

Hahahah, I get this engine and it just screams to go fast. I CANT putts around anymore and have been bitten to challenge some of the Honda's and such. Believe it or not I'm acually holding my own with the lot of em.

Anyway, I guess this is Jakes idea of a daily driver, hehehe, got to love it.

Very pleased with the engine. I passed emissions with 5x the levels to spare. Forgot to thank Shad for helping. Still looking to have Shad take a look one one thing for me. AND yes... I should have gotten the IV. Oh well, someday.

Thanks Jake.

I have a 2 liter in my '73 built by a local shop and I can chirp the tires if I try hard, I don't useally since I used to have a problem with breaking CV joint bolts.
Oh and I've done 80 in it, which wasn't really all that bad but I don't think I want to go much faster unless I lower it some...

I have recently purchased one of Jake's new 2109cc powerstroke's for my '76 Westy. Yes, 90mph is possible. It wasn't cheap, but well worth it. Now I can't wait for Jake's CIS fuel injection conversion to complete it. Check out Jake's postings on his new powerstroke over on the Type IV forum.

Thanks guys, just noticed this post....

Nice to see you here, Paul...Haven't heard from you in a while....

Anyway, a Bus is not about speed, unless you are insane, like myself...My 2109 CIS Injected Powerstroke will run 85MPH all day with an 091 gearbox and 205/70/ 14 tires. I can do this loaded with 5 complete TIV engines, going to car shows in 90+ degree heat, and average 23-27MPG if I keep it below 75 or so MPG...

I designed the powerstroke engines for reliability, torque and COOL RUNNING without needing a non stock cooling system. These engines have enough torque to tear a stock trans apart if you give it a hard time, one of my customer from Puerto Rico has grenaded 4th in his already, that takes torque!!
