Service Manual Recommendation
I've bought the Bentley manuals for all my VW's in the past, however I recent bought a '56 pick-up and the Robert Bentley site only lists T2 Service Manual for 1963-1967. Is this the one to buy for a '56? Is there any other book that is essential to '56 T2 ownership? (I already have Muir, Haynes et al)

Contact Thom Fitzpatrick from the Vintage Bus list on www.type2.com. He is organizing a special run of these manuals from Bentley since it was discontinued years ago.

Hiya Ghia,
If I were you I'd check in with a good literature dealer to see exactly what's available to cover a 56 Type 2. The best of the Lit dealers is Logan Gray.
You can catch him at 503.292.7747 in the evenings Pacific Daylight Time. If it's out there he'll know about it and probably have a copy.

There's manuals for your bus out there, but most will probably be pretty pricey. Also what you would be dealing w/ would be, I guess, antique auto-literature.
Go to VW planet and look in the T2 sect. under literature, you can at least find a scan of an old owners manual there. her's a link to it. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/type2/
You can also look at type2.com and vintagebus.com. All three are great sites.
But if I were you, I would get on that list for the old Bently pre-63 reprints, mentioned by Pillow above. I know I'm going to. I had forgotten about it actually, thanx Pillow.

Thanks for the advice. I've added my name to Thom's list for another printing of the Bentley manual. It strikes me that there weren't a whole lot of significant changes between my '56 and the '63's in the currently available Bentley. In addition, much of the 36hp mechanical information can be found in the Beetle Bentleys covering those years. It seems that when you own one of these old vehicles you have to be able to McGyver just about everything - even the repair manuals!
