speed and shifting

ok I got two problems first and most important probably is my speedometor doesn't work I dont know why any suggestions on fixing it? I dont know anything about it. also its hard to shift down or up into 2nd gear I cant find 2nd easily .. should I just take it out and clean it or what should I do? think its just old and needs cleaning? anyways thanks in advance

What year is it? If it's `68-up you may need to pull the trans to fix the shifting problem, but start by checking out the condition of the shift coupler at the front of the transmission.
Check the speedo cable first - make sure it's engaged in the LF dustcap, disconnect it from the speedo head and go for a drive to see if it's turning.
