I will back out of it at 220, more at 230. If I hit 240, I will pull over with a fast idle and try to figure out what is wrong. Haven't hit over 220 yet, and then was a hot day with a lot of traffic. What I do need is a thermostat. Lately, I have not been able to get over 150

By the time you stop, the damage may be done. If the gauge shows an irregularity, you know that something may be wrong.
Sidewalk, whatever you do... if the engine is overheating just from over use, you should not stop and let the engine run. It will overheat more.
You should slow down but keep driving. At a standstill, your engine is just picking up hot air rising up from the engine.
I'm happy to drive an engine at 125oC MAX... thats about 250oF. After that I slow down.
