Q: re: come-alongs ... hand winch

Post by Derek May »

Got a bit stuck getting out of a fishing lake with a nasty road. Got out okay due to my buddy with a 4x4 and a tow strap, but would have been screwed on my own.

I've been meaning to equip the Van with a come-along self recovery hand winch. I did a web search, and found products by lug-all, quickwinch and others:
http://www.lug-all.com/ http://www.qwikwinch.com http://www.extremeoutback.com/Recovery_Gear.htm http://www.bridge-cranes.com/prod_lt.html

Anyone have, carry and use one of these things? I can imagine going for cheap would be a bad idea. I could just see the handle on a cheapie folding like an aluminum pie plate just at the wrong time.

You can pick one up at Walmart or an auto parts store for about $20. As far as cheap vs. quality, all the ones I've seen are about the same. Keep it out of the rain, and you shouldn't have any problems with it.

hope this helps
