Paint advice

I'm about to paint my '77 bus. I did the body work myself and did a fairly good job I think. But there is probably some minor defects that i want to "hide". What color other than white would cover up minor problems with the sheet metal. Also when i was sanding the nose I noticed that the large flat section where the emblem/headlights are has a 1/4 inch or so coat of what looks like body filler over the entire panel. As far as i can tell this bus has never been painted and there is no dents that I can see from the back side. Did Volkswagen put this here for chip protection or something??????
