Fuel Pump

Post by lowpro1984 »

Hi guys I have a 77 automatic bus and when I got it running recently I hooked the fuel pump up the right way with the + and - from the FI that was near the fuel pump and when I would start the bus it would try to run but as soon as I let go of the key to go into the running position the engine would die. Right now I have a wire running from the coil to the + on the fuel pump and it runs. What do you guys think is wrong? When I got the bus it was also hooked up to the coil but I want it hooked up the right way. Can anyone help?

Thank You,
Chris R.

Check carefully on the stock wiring diagram. There are supposed to be two hot wires that lead to the fuel pump relay...just going from memory here so verify this with the book. One is only hot to the FI, fuel pump etc...when the key is in the start position. Once the engine is started, the movement of the airflap in the AFC completes a circuit, switching the relay to constant feed from a different source than the starter. The wiper contacts in the flap could be dirty, bent or broken not allowing contact once the engine is started...this ic very common. Instead of fixing it...many people wire around it to the coil. The problem with that...is that ther are many times...problems with the other wiper contacts inside the little black box on th eAFC, that signal full load enrichment. So you alos have poor running and fuel mixture when it does start. Pry the lid off and check everything visually and with your voltmeter for proper operation. Ray
