just had my tranny in my 59 kombi redone, it was popping out of fourth also. the fourth gear syncros were worn out. try new bushings in your shift coupler first i did that in my bay it helped for a while. good luck.

what is it with the 4th gears latetly.my has the same problem.everything was allright until recently and i did a complete repair on it about 6 montjs ago.new shyncroes, new seals, new oil ans time to detail it and enshure proper shifting and aftyer 6 months the 4th started to jump.i forgot to mention i updated the engine with a 2270CC powere stoker from JAKE.this beast is really powwrfull and i think the brass shyncro didin't hold the power. well,i'm taking the engine out again and i'll try to shime it so the shyncro doesn't wear or slip.the only i hate is to take all the engine tins ans modifications(gas pump, oil cooler, oil breather and all the detailed wiring just to fix a gear.but it has to be done until someone get a better way to take the tranny out without taking the engine out to.planning to send the shyncro to a specialist to make it out of steel and make customized apacers to keep the right separation between them specially the 4th gear.will let you know the result.

I recently had the same problem, and trying to hold the shifter in place was of no use, which only confirmed that the "slider" which surrounds the hub was worn-out from simply using it..hopefully the tranny fluid was kept up to specs and that the 4th.gear etc did not burn or get to hot which would lead into many other potential problems..inspecting the inside is the only way to know..rancho or longenterprises.com can help you

there is a reason for using brass ...if you make the syncros out of a harder metal, it will take the "points" off the sliders and your now back to gears jumping out again..in your case, it could be as simple as the shifter fork out of adjustment...lets hope so

while you are checking the adjustment of the forks etc., see if the sliders have sharp points on them (take a magnifying glass if you have to)also look to see if they are evenally angled on each side of the points.. in other words each side of the point should look the same....I have heard from one individual that the small plastic ball that the hockey stick slides into can wear out..but this is a long shot..look for anything that shows unusual wear even the parts connecting up to tranny

The flanks on the engagement teeth of 4th gear and the corresponding flanks on the slider are worn out. No rocket science here, just the expected effects of high mileage. The problems surfaces with Type II's before bugs for three reasons --- more rpms to go the same mileage means increased wear on engine and transmission, more time spent in 4th gear in a bus than in a bug, more weight in a bus puts more load on the worn flanks, causing the tranny to pop out of gear more readily.
Change the press-on engagement teeth on 4th gear, along with the 3rd/4th slider, and it will no longer pop out of 4th gear. But there will be many other components approaching the end of their life expectancy in a transmission this old.
Longs Enterprises specializes in recutting the slider flanks. Press-on engagement teeth are under $30.

I STILL HAVEN'T GET THE TRANNY DOWM BUT AS SOON AS I FIND OUT I WILL LET YOU KNOW.THE EXPERT SAYS IT MIGHT BE THE "FORK"THAT HAS SOME WEAR WICH IT WILL TAKE SOME ADJSTMENT OR REPLACEMENT AND MAYBE WILL NEED THE 4TH SHYNCRO AND HOPEFULLY NOT THE 4TH GEAR..I'M TAKING IT OUT THIS WEEK IF I GET SOME TIME FROM MY 7/24 WORK.
