HELP! Progressive Weber on 2.0 question

Post by dstar5000 »

Hey Guys! Just broke in the new P&Cs on my 2.0 but can't get it to idle correctly. I backed out the idle adjust screw until it didn't touch, then turn it until it just touched, then one full turn in. I bottomed the idle mixture screw(lightly!)and backed it out two full turns. The engine will not start no matter how far I turn the mixture in or out. I finally had to turn the idle adjust screw in 1 1/2 more turns, for a total of 2.5 turns to get it to crank. Then adjust the mixture screw for highest rpm and back out one half turn. This runs great AFTER the big ol flat spot on take off, but it seems to bog down on highway sometimes. I think I may have a plugged idle circuit or is this carb not properly jetted for a 2.0 Type IV? Also, I am running a 009 at 28 max degrees, this means my idle is about 12-14 degrees. This is a new engine and I don't want to BURN IT!(well, almost new! The guy in Conway,SC wouldn't split the case and do the mains and cam, name is Jack, STAY AWAY from him!)Charged me $1700 to put in new rod bearings, P&Cs and rework exhaust valves in two heads. Got the engine back and it was covered in grease, very dirty. I was VERY disappointed! :-)

Holy Cow!!! What a ripoff! Not sure how that guy would keep customers? Sounds like he does not know schniz about T4s if he did not want to break the case.

Next time just drop it by my place (in Marietta GA/Atlanta) and I will show you how to do it right! Note very time consuming, but you end up with a work of art instead of a grease pit.

Not to make you paranoid or anything because T4 bearings are very tough compared to T1 and even used bearings can last a good while more than new T1 bearings.

You going to Edisto next weekend?

I'm pretty sure it's the 009 doing it, I had one in my 73(2.0) for about ten minutes, before I got so disgusted with how it was running I took it out and put my stock one back in, I still have the 009 in the basement, it was in the back with a bunch of other parts when I obught it so I thought I'd give it a whirl. You may want to look at getting a Mallory dizzy from aircooled.net supposedly will give you a 10% increase in power.

What's up in Edisto?
Yea, first he tells me my old one is a 1700,(engine number sed it was a 2000!) which I didn't want in a bus, then he says he got a 2000 he can rebuild for me for $1400 plus my old core(I dropped a valve). TWO months later I go to Conway to pick it up and I thought the motor he pointed out as the new one was an OLD one! I actually laughed and asked him where my new motor was! It looked like he did a quick high pressure wash, pulled the heads and P&Cs, and put new P&Cs in and bolted everything back together. He gave me 20-50w to breakin the rings too, is that right? I asked him how ot break it in and he sed to just run it like hell! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Anyway, I had three batteries jumping it off, we turned the motor over for twenty minutes and it still wouldn't *put out the light*. I finally connected the coil and it built pressure in two or three seconds after cranking. I don't have a gauge, but I will check it somehow.
Anyway, i'm thinking about going back ot the junkyard and getting a stock dizzy for it. 12-14 seems REAL high to me, but I wanted it to top out at about 28 degrees total. Hopefully, that and disasembling and cleaning the idle circuit on the progressive get rid of the massive flat spot I have.
Let me know what is up in Edisto, OK? email [email protected] anytime. I have a complete dell 40 setup, but the wife is frightened of them! ;-) It's her bus, *I* have a 71 Bradley GT with a 1641 in it. :-D
