What year is this SC?

Post by goatski »

Ok can anyone tell me what year is this Single cab truck.

Apparently its for sale, but all the info I got was "Volkswagen Truck, runs great!"

I'm new to VW's and this will be my first VW purchase. Does anyone else think it looks a bit weird? I mean besides the fact that its missing the gates, and has non-stock tires. Does it look lifted to you guys? And is that an original front end?

Should I be worried about this at all?

thanks for the help

Looks like a '69 to me. Dunno where you're from, and cannot see if its LH or RH drive. Should have a 1600 engine, upright cooling, drum brakes all round. I think the later disc brake front end is a bolt on conversion if desired, altho that will mean carrying two spares due to different bolt pattern. It looks like its been lifted about 100mm over standard and was originally "flipper" blue,
Good luck to you, I'd take it if price was right.

'69? Hmm I thought trucks were only made until '67. Well I dont know much but oh well.

Good to hear its a 1600 though, I like the extra power. Drum all around sounds good to.

And price? Actually it was "make offer." Considering there are no gates, what would you guys offer? From looking around at other sites and prices, I'm thinking somwhere $1,000-$2,000. Waddya you guys think?

Yup, definately a 68-71 Vintage. Its not a splitty, its the 70's series bay window bus. In case you don't know all this, note the differences you'll have with later Type 2: Drum brakes all 'round (they put disks up front in later years), the 1600 upright engine (later years have the more powerful more reliable Type 4 in 1700/1800/2000 cc configurations), and I'm not positive about this, but I don't think you have the vaccuum assist power brakes on this one, which come on later Type 2. Cosmetically, it should have a bigger "VW" on the front than later Type 2, the turn signal lights up front are down low, instead of positioned like eyebrows, and it has a step bumper. Out back, the rear signal lights are a smaller oval, rather than the taller lozenge.

While the trucks were rare, I think they made them through the 70's, and there are even Vanagon configurations. Watch also for the Crew Cabs, which I think are pretty cool.

1972 and later have the type 4 engines. There are differences in the air intakes in the Van for pre 72 and 72 and later, but you don't see that on the trucks and crew cabs.

Happy hunting.

It`s a 68-70. Can`t see door handles well enough to tell which exactly, however the differences are cosmetic. A 71 would not be wide 5 wheel pattern.
Even though we did not get them here in the US most of the world got type 2 single and doubles through the mid eighties.
What`s it worth? that depends on how bad you want it. It`s a matter of supply and demand. Good Luck. Bob

It's a 69 or 70 and without the sidegates will not be worth more than $1,000.00 unless it runs perfectly and has no rust holes anywhere - highly unlikely . most of these pickups have been worked to death but are well worth saving . most likely he sold the gates as he knows the truck is rusted out - be wary ! don't bid on it with out inspecting it closely - look under battery , behine the front bumper and bottom of windshield too , plus in the tool box under the bed - any holes _anywhere_ means rust and lots of it !

This is a very good driving truck plus it is rated at 1 ton (didn't know that eh?) so it can really work hard if you want it for that . I rescued my poor old beat to sh*t panel van and fixed everthing but the damn rust (yet!) , it's a great truck and I both work it plus commute in daily Los Angeles traffic with it . not cheap !

Buy it , fix it , DRIVE it ! .

thanks for the replies

well it turns out that the owner had intentions of still working on the truck.

meaning it wont be done till the end of the month, THEN he would sell it to me. that would probably explain the fact that it has no gates.

which probably means I cant afford it. owell it was wortha try

Not afford it...? I do not know what this guys goal on the truck is, but I consider it more of a hack than anything so the price will be lower than a stock one.

Depending on the rust condition and engine I would say $500-$1500.

Bay window SCs are not exactly that sought after.

What Adrian said !

Be aware they are GREAT DRIVERS once you get the little stuff sorted out , plus the heater works GREAT , roomy , comfy - did I mention pleasant to drive ? . pop a '71 tranny in and go cross country like I do . you'll love it .

Nate,
What is special about a 71 trans? I e-mailed you this question, but your answer jammed up my computer and had to be deleted. I am parting out a 71 single cab, which is why I am curious to know if the trans is different than other models.

Kurt , sorry about my late reply but i've been pretty much cut off from the internet @ work and I don't have it @ home (boo-hoo)

Anyway , the ratios are better in '71 , mostly due to the longer ring & pinion but first was a bit lower for better take off & hillclimb ability too . it's not a biggie to swap it , try it and see if you like it - I'm betting you will - my '68 could only do 55 in the desert with the old tranny as the engine would heat up from overspeeding untill I installed the Rancho rebuilt '71 box , it is better but the rebult leave much to be desired - almost the mile it went over warranty it began to howl on decelleration . sucks .
