It`s been done lots. Right here on this forum we`ve talked about it recently so read some post and you`ll get a lot of answers
The chief points are the rear mount issue. Some use it and some do`nt. The other issue is the tin around the engine. It is either made up using a combination of the two tins or a special molded unit is purchased just for this purpose. A third issue is that of gearing. The type1 likes a little lower gears but those that have done it say it`s close enough for them without changing. Anyway it`s all right heere, just dig in and digest and keep asking questions as they come to you. You can do it in a day.
We want to hear more of what motivates you as well. You got a bad type 4 ? Are you intimidated by the later ect? Good Luck and thanks for posting. Bob

Martib:
What are you running? Question isn't too clear, whether you are looking at putting a type 4 engine into a pre-1972 bus, or a type 1 upright into a 1972 or later bus.
Anyways, check around the site, much information is devoted to stuffing a 2.0L or bigger Type 4 engine in the back of a bug.
The Bus had both engines, which you probably know, so its going to be possible to switch back and forth -- you just have to deal with whatever technical issues arise.

It can easily be done and all the parts are available. (Some of the other posts about the same subject are mine)
However, why change unless the Type 4 is broken and you just happen to have a Type 1?
The type 4 longblock isn't much different than a type 1, other than parts prices, and is much stronger. The exterior engine parts (intake, exhaust, cooling etc) are a little different but not too hard to figure out. Fuel injection is nice until it breaks, then you just learn how to fix it or else replace it with carb(s).
Good luck and have fun!
