just pulled an '050' complete with ignition amp etc off a t25 from a breakers, i'm going to replace my '009' with it, wiring is no probs my questions relates to vacuum, i'm running an upright 16 with a pair of 32-34 pdsit's off a t3 suitecase, i've currently got the balance take-offs on the manifolds isolated ( i heard this was best?) and the carbs are capped off with pseudo K&N's, on the t25 the dizzy vacuum was connected to the balance pipe? between the carbs and the LHS carb itself, is all that is necessary for me to do is to replicate this, in otherwords reconnect balance pipes and tap into for one vacuum pipe and connect other vacuum pipe to carb? or is there anything i need to be cautious about in the swop, can i take the vacuums off from one side only? cheers.

Couple of things here : firstly , the 050 is a mechanical advance unit only - no vacuum hoses ! .
Second , you must NOT EVER attach the vacuum advance hose to the balance tube on a dual carby setup as the vacuum advance only needs vacuum above idle ("ported") and the balance tube has full engine vacuum at all times - a very bad thing as far as timing goes ~ it will likely burn up your engine .
Next , the 050 has WAY too much total advance for a V.W. engine unles you time it to full advance , around 30 degrees above 2,500 RPM , should drop to zero or ATDC at idle .
Better to find a used German 009 in the swap meet , they cost $5.00 on the west coast and I buy quite a few , lube 'em up and stick them in . works great when properly timed .

maybe i got the wrong suffix, cos it's definately vacuum, also the caps are the same as 009's, cos it put my 009 cap on cos it was better, i deffed the retard pipe and ISU and timmed it as normal, it's been on the van now over a month no probs.

Wow , wierd - an 050 dizzy with vacuum .
I don't know about that, I seem to still be learning .
I find 010 dizzy's in the bottom of junk boxes on a fairly regular basis - I have mates in thr U.K. who find them at the autojumbles same as I do - you gotta LOOK in the grubby 'junkbox' and DIG all the way to the bottom , getting your hands GREASY or it'll never happen . don't pay more than $5.00 as 1/2 of them are worn out and don't retard at idle or advance WAY too far .
You must NOT use the vacuum from the dual carby balance tube to operate the vacuum advance ! it will have full manifold vacuum and that is a very bad thing . use the tiny vacuum connector usually found on the left carby or use a mechanical dizzy set to 28 ~ 30 degrees full advance . I don't think capping off the balance tube is a good idea either .

Yeh, there are definatly vacume advance dizzies out there. I've got one in my '59 Kombi's engine. They came on some 70's model bay window busses. Nice thing is it uses same cap, rotor, points, as a 009. Makes it easy to replace those things. Great dizzy.
