91 Vanagon salvage or save

Post by honez72 »

I have a 91 Vanagon Carat which I overpaid for and still owe quite a bit on money on.
Last Dec I got into a collision with Bozo who had no insurance and neither did I. I paid out of pocket for the repairs to get the van running, but it still needs 2500 in body work. But thats not the big problem. Over the summer the engine overheated and according to 2 mechanics, is "burned up". It does run, but makes a terrible racket and keeps cutting out. The VW specialist says it will cost 4000$ to get the new engine plus the labor. I am not capable of installing a new engine myself. I have the money to put in the new engine...and if I do that I would have essentially a new vehicle with no miles, correct (body damage notwithstanding)?
The mechanic told me that there are "no after-market performance" things he can do to up the performance. (It ran fine in the city, but lagged on steep inclines... like 25 mph).
Can I actually put a different engine in the Van? I have heard of subaru engines going in, and diesel.
Finally, if I sell it for salvage, how much do you think I could reasonably expect to get for it? The body (where its not damaged) is in excellent shape, as is the interior.
Does anybody out there have any suggestions or thoughts on the subject that would be of help? Thanks in advance, Kimberly

Yes! A V6 Nissan Maxima engine will fit. The one with 190 HP would be most benificial. All you have to do is make a fly wheel. If you get it done correctly it will fit under the hatch!

Kimberly?...... When you read this do respond. Don't sell. There is nothing like the ride of of a Vanagon Van. Air cooled, water cooled German powered or Japanese and what you can do with the back seats taken out is only limited by your imagination.
