Greetings to all: Latest challenge Shift TUBE Bracket

Post by REZ60 »

Hi Happy with 1967 Bug I purchased. Swing axle was difficult to get into 3rd and 4th GEAR,,, Previous owner supplied a shift tube BRACKET and bushing. Found THE BRACKET unusable with a broken ring. Bushing was completely missing. I can not see any access to install the repacement bracket in the tunnel. Since the bracket has mounting bolts stamped into the bracket there has to be a way to get it into the tunnel. Appreciate all replys

With the shifter off, clean the top of the tunnel. Surrounding the hole you should see a series of dimples where the spot welds are. Drill these out and the bracket should drop away. Since you have the shift rod out already, it shouldn't be to hard to fish it out through the inspection hole at the rear under the back seat.
Or, pull it out the front hole by the front beam.
