200whp?
Hey guys. I am a turbo guy through and through, but am curious what if any off the shelf parts out there will get 200whp on pump gas naturally aspirated from a 2276. Is this where big valved Comp-E's shine, or would a set of Super Pro 044s do the job? Big lift and duration are fine. What are your guys thoughts? Thanks!

Re: 200whp?
That is asking alot from a 2 valve per cylinder motor of that size. I wouldn't expect it to be very drive-able on the street. I would think high CR and lots of rev's would be needed, does e85 count as "pump gas"?

No e85. Drivable is determined by the driver
Not looking to build a long comfortable cruiser, high strung is fairly acceptable.
I do realize that this is a tall order.

I won't fault you on that, sometimes hard to find and in my area, inconsistent blends make things for people difficult at best.Chip Birks wrote:No e85.
Seems dual IDA's or ITB's w/ efi will be mandatory and some high flowing heads along with every other trick you can muster...

I have a lot of e85 local, and have used it in the past with my current turbo setup. And it very well could be an option, but i do believe it can be done on gasoline. Just gonna take some good flowing stuff. EFI would be part of the combo for sure. Not afraid of a little more compression than standard either.

Re: 200whp?
I have seen several different vendors advertise 2276 engines at 200hp and over, I would be more interested in torque specs but those are rarely advertised. I am much more impressed with an engine that makes 200ft/lbs at 3500rpm than an engine that makes 200hp at 7200rpm, I think that either one is possible with a 2276 built with the right combination of parts.
Good Luck

Re: 200whp?
I agree, i remember when CB came out with their wedge port cnc heads claiming that 200hp was possible on pump gas. Pretty sure that was a flywheel number though. So probably like 170 at the wheels. That have come out with better stuff since then. I know the Ultra Wedge Ports made 224hp/189tq at the flywheel on pump gas with 11:1 and pump gas. That is probably ball park 200 at the tire. It had ti valves, which aren't very practical for a street engine, but still a cool arrangement. That is with an 044 based head casting too. Pretty impressive. Same engine ran 11's in Pat Downs 67 street car too.

I just had my "self-built" 2332 cc Beetle on the Dynojet and came up with a best run of 204 WHP. 94 octane pump fuel, 10:1 CR, JPM MS230 heads, Raptor cam 0.425" lift & 274-degrees (0.050"), Scat 1.4 rockers, IDA's, 1.75" Bugpack header, A1 Magnaflow muffler.Chip Birks wrote:Hey guys. The heads were fly cut to reduce the chamber, but no porting was done. Here's a short iPhone video:

Re: 200whp?
Lifting .615 at the valve? Wow! My current cam is similar, with just a little less lift. Assuming about 1.45:1 ratio at the rocker since i've never seen scats actually measure out at 1.4. Impressive performance out of that combo. I often find myself drooling over those heads.neil68 wrote:I just had my "self-built" 2332 cc Beetle on the Dynojet and came up with a best run of 204 WHP. 94 octane pump fuel, 10:1 CR, JPM MS230 heads, Raptor cam 0.425" lift & 274-degrees (0.050"), Scat 1.4 rockers, IDA's, 1.75" Bugpack header, A1 Magnaflow muffler.Chip Birks wrote:Hey guys. Re: 200whp?
Dial showed 0.599" lift with my Scat 1.4 rockers (1.41 actual ratio).
