Autostick to Standard transaxle

Post by EastCoastOffRoad »

Do I need to do anything to change over from the autostick to a standard?

A donor car would be nice. What year is the car? Early AutoStick chassis were built on a separate production line and lacked the conduit in the tunnel for a clutch cable, making for more work when doing the conversion...but if it's late enough to have the tube, it's a bolt-in operation. Besides the trans & front mount, you'll need the pedal cluster and the correct "manual" oil pump for the engine, which will of course also need a flywheel and the appropriate clutch components to match the transaxle vintage. The AutoStick shifter doesn't have to be changed, but should be for a cleaner-looking conversion. The shift rod in the tunnel is shorter on the AutoStick (and twisted slightly) so if you don't change it you'll need to fabricate a longer shift coupler. The distributor advance curve is less than ideal but it'll work...and the shift pattern displayed on the ashtray will be wrong ;)

Are you racing?
Scavenging the 3/4 rocker box with the 8mm autostick pump "stage" might work well.
Also, one lister here has used the 1/2 stage as a turbo scavenge stage for years.

If it's in good shape, it might be a keeper or sellable.

"new" pumps seldom fit properly, (loose fit/slide in) causing headaches.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
