auto trans diff offset 003 vs. 010?

Post by Piledriver »

short: can I use std T3 automatic axles on an 010 trans stuffed in my square?

--- ignore the CV size, that can be dealt with if the length is ~OK.

I'm considering installing a 003 or possibly a 010 automatic in my square for various reasons.

Does anyone have dimensions on the stub-to stub width on both, and happen to know if the offset is the same?
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

If you do the 003 which comes from a Type 3 then everything fits.If you use the 003 from a Bus,then nothing fits and it's all fabrication-and obviously the same goes with the 010 Bus trans. The Bus 003 flanges are about 22mm narrower than the Bus 010 flanges. If you are swapping the trans in a swingaxle Type3 and you dont have the rear engine hanger, then it's also farication heaven. It can be done though-but a fair bit of work.I have a type 3 auto with a 2.7lt Type 4 engine in an Oval Beetle and it's awesome to drive.I shifted the frame horns out each side 50mm,made the Kafer rear shock tower braces and used the Type 4 rear engine support bar mounted to custom brackets at the rear bumper brackets.I had to make the front trans mount and the rear mounts at the bellhousing like a Beetle setup. It is a daily driver, but I have drag raced it many times without any issues showing up.The only fault with the 003 auto is the pan gasket setup-they use a cork gasket which always weeps oil.I have tried making gaskets from different materials, but they always weep oil.My Type 4 is fuel injected with 48mm Throttle Bodies, which caused some isues with a vacuum signal for both the MAP sensor and the trans modulator.I fixed the problem by drilling each manifold and fitting a .020" restrictor in each then joining all 4 together-works a treat.

Welcome to the STF!

Please start a thread and introduce yourself, the setup sounds droolworthy.

Sounds like an awesome setup (and about what I have in mind for a mildly boosted 2466)

The automatics are really the only VW transmissions that will take decent power over the long haul and not cost many K$ to have "built", and "built" manuals still die quickly with any real power.

Sadly a 3.71(IIRC) R&P costs about 3K, but it's probably still a bargain if you DIY.

I have been around here for a long time-had some log on issues-hence the new username.I have a couple of pics of the end result of the frame horn and pan mods.I had to fabricate front and rear trans mounts as you will see.I used engine mounts from a V8 Chrysler and it made the driveline very stiff, but still not too harsh to make driving a bummer.

I found some more that might be of interest.I used a Type 1 engine and a rear body cut of a Beetle to get it in the correct postion so that it would all seal in the engine bay.I had to cut into the torsion bar tube 20mm to get it all far enough forward for the engine to seal up correctly. I had to cut the hole in the body because the auto housing is much larger than the manual trans and made the ally panel to seal it all up.I had to cut the seat frames to clear the ally panel, which wasn't a big job. This is the car it all went into. Also one of the latest auto trans car.Using a Vanagon 010 with a Turbo, methanol injected Autocraft engine.

Hello nbturbo!
Love it!
Now I will steal some of that and counterpost on my UAC thread about 010/003.
Are you OK with that?

I have three Vanagon automatics. I'm seriously thinking of doing the swap from 091 to 010 in my baja bug. My only concern is the gearing with 30" tires and only 3 speeds. I need to be able to lug and have good gearing at low speeds for off road use.
