I have also heard of a spark erosion machine being called a "disintegrator"... FWIW
Speedier than a Fasting Bullet!

FWIW, the center of nearly all dowel pins is not hardened, just high quality high carbon steel. The outside is case hardened to about .010" deep, but you can drill through the center. It is possible to drill and tap them so you can yank them out with a slide hammer.

Dev, I have some "soft" and some are rock hard all the way thru. VW Paradise built the motor and they indicated that a bad batch of pins were installed back about the time I bought my motor. the broken ones are the overly hardened ones. I think the burn deal is what im going have to do when the motor is apart.

That's odd.
We have one of those "tap burning" EDM machines here at work. Not enough stroke to do a crankshaft though.

Re: removing sheared flywheel dowel's
The depth of the hole isn't the problem. It won't fit under the head of the machine.
I can direct you to a site where you can buy "rock drills" they are carbide drills designed to drill through broken drills and taps. I've used them with good success. That dowel is not likely to be harder than a drill, even being heat treated all the way thru.

Dev, that would be cool. I tried to use a center punch to set a spot for the drill but I can't even do that.

They can't be used with a hand drill. Only a milling machine or drill press.

Re: removing sheared flywheel dowel's
are they still stuck? I think I would try to weld a hook or bolt to it and yank it out with a slide hammer.

Re: removing sheared flywheel dowel's
With normal carbide drills, you are absolutely correct Pile. With these drill, however, that is no the case. Since they have no helical, spiral flutes and a "chisel" point, they won't embed themselves in th ematerial they are being used on if they break. You are correct on the reson for not using a power, (hand), drill though.Piledriver wrote:Translated: Hard and brittle as hell, get even a little bit out of whack with a hand drill and they will snap off, and you get to edm those out too.Devastator wrote:Here ya go.
