Swing axle gearbox into IRS set up

Post by Mr Brown »

I currently have the creative engineering IRS kit fitted to my 1965 bus it's an excellent kit that I've had on nearly ten years with no issues. I'm running a 1303 s IRS gearbox with the kit.
My question is I have found a new pro rancho gearbox for sale that is a swing axle box. Could I fit this into my current set up?
Many thanks

The Rancho trans should be built on a late-style case which will accept the IRS O-ring sideplates, and both transmissions should have 8-bolt differential carriers, so you could use those parts from your present trans to convert the Rancho to IRS (or find another IRS donor if you'd prefer to leave the present trans intact). It's a relatively straightforward operation since the pinion depth setting is unaffected by the conversion - but the ring-gear backlash and diff carrier bearing preload still need to be set properly, a job best left to someone with the experience and tools for it.
Most likely both transaxles have the "late" clutch release bearing/operating shaft arrangement; if not you could need to change some parts there (exactly what would depend upon their existing configurations), and possibly the clutch cover.
If the Rancho is built with a late gear carrier/mainshaft bearing its nosecone should already have been modified for clearance/oiling, so nothing for you to deal with there unless you swap nosecones when installing the hockey stick from your present trans.
