Jug stuck in head

Post by patfrank »

I have a 1975 type 4 transporter I bought here in Costa Rica for $200. I pulled the motor and tore it down today, want to make everything fresh. But when I pulled the head, one of the cylinder jugs is stuck in the head. I cannot get it to move. It is soaked in WD40 right now but will not budge. Any suggestions? Thanks, Pat

I have had 100% success with a dead blow hammer straight against the fins (no angle! ),
Since you it that far apart, another thing I would try is a propane torch.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

I like to hold a piece of wood, like a 2x4, squarely against the fins and strike it with the hammer (any hammer will do with the wood, but a heavier one's easier) - easier to assure that the fins don't experience a glancing blow that will break them that way. Go back and forth all around, hitting it from north-south-east-west...

No, broke the jug and a couple fins off the head. The other head has something weird/wrong with a valve so going to need a couple heads.... See attached pics

Well as there are 35 aircooled VW's in Costa Rica, yes, but I just order from the states and wait 10 days......
