Sorry about the tactless replies, I forget I'm not on the Samba some times.
If anything the gens being more simpler are probably more robust, my best mates 68 has 600,000miles/1 million KMs and more than likely has the original generator, it certainly hasnt been changed in the last 25 years, 250,000miles anyway.
THe original 4/74 Bosch externally regulated alternator in my bug was almost at half a million KMs when I did the subi conversion 5 years ago and still punching out 14 volts, so I havnet had to look at replacing one but I hear a lot of bitching about the quality of some modern repros though
I'm sure its just a case of you get what you pay for though, don't go the the cheapest one with chinese bearings and you should be right.
Rob, re the A/C thing its funny the amount of people especially the old timers that come up to tell me about the bug they had back in the 60s and 70s and are truly shocked when they find out it has A/C.
especially when I tell them how Lbugs in the US damn near more had A/C than didnt.
My A/C origiinaly came from a Jap import Lbug, finding RHD 1303 systems is needle in a hay stack.
