Identification of baulk rings (syncro rings)

Post by justin pane »

Can anyone please help me identify the baulk rings in a 091 gearbox
1st gear has 3 sets of 4 teeth missing
2nd gear has 3 sets of 2 teeth missing
3rd gear has no teeth missing
4th gear has 3 sets of 2 teeth missing
is this correct, and is 2nd and 4th the same?
thanks for any help

I thought 2nd, 3rd and 4th were all the same on an 091. We may need photos. Are there any notches in the perimeter? How about the gray "moly" coating, which (if any) have that?

Having trouble posting photos,
there are no notches on 1st, there are notches on 2nd and 4th, all have "moly" coating on some of the boxes I've stripped down other boxes I've stripped down they have grooves and no "moly" some are mixed, their seems to be no pattern,
I'm confused mainly with 2nd and 4th are they the same or am I missing something.
(I refer to 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th but I'm not sure if I've got that right,) please can someone put me right?

If you can get a hold of the late model Bentley manual,
it give a good run down of what fits where.

Generally the first gear is a different part number to the other three,
but the last mention in the manual, says that you can use the 2nd through 4th part number on all four gears.

A few things (if I recall correctly) about these synchro rings:

1st gear without notches, has 110* angle ("roof" angle)
2nd-4th with 3 notches have 120* angle
4th gear often comes without moly coating (although moly rings are fine in this position)
Once an idler gear has been run with a moly ring, that ring shouldn't be replaced with a plain ring
