HOW MANY MPG

Post by Pablo »

Even with one of Jon Karcey's 60 hp / 55 mpg engines, the best mileage I could manage was 36 mpg in my '66 bug. A lead foot makes all the difference in what mileage you will see.

HOW MANY MPG

Post by Troke6 »

I have just returned from a 3000 mile tour with a 74 SuperBeetle, with stock 1600 engine, CD ignition. Cruised the I-highways at 67 mph, the secondary paved roads (about 1/3 of the distance) at 55 mph.

Mileage over the whole trip was 26.7 mpg.

In 1967, I was using a 67 VW to go school (150 miles away) and back on weekends. Mileage averaged 27 mpg on highways with 65 mph speed limits.

I am impressed with folks that can cruise at 80 mph and get 35 mpg.

You've got a problem. Unless your right foot has palsy, it's a mechanical problem. Even with w-i-i-d-e tires (requiring-wider-fenders-wide) my `69 Beetle gets 25 to 27.5 MPG highway. I just did a 400 mi roadtrip at speeds of 60 to 70 MPH (sometimes more, up to 85 MPH for short spurts). That's corrected for tire size and odo error, meticulously confirmed with GPS...no "stretching" of the truth.
