25&36hp thermostat opening temp range

Post by volkaholic1 »

I asked this on thesamba and no one seems to know! Does anyone know for sure? It should be stamped on the bottom.
I reproduce the thermostat for the engine cooling flaps. Someone asked me about the 36hp stats, and I do not know the answer. The guy thinks it is a different temp range, can anyone confirm? I also got some part number questions if anyone knows.

111 119 159 - 25&36hp stat, up to 1963, is opening temp range 75-80C ? IS THIS RIGHT?
this is the 1 I would like to offer

I already offer the following:
111 119 159A - 1964-1974, carb engine, 65-70C opening temp
043 119 159 1975-1979, FI engine, 80-85C opening temp
021 119 159A, all type IV, 4 cylinder 912 & 914, 1965-1976, 85-90C opening temp

part number? - Porsche 356 carb pre-heat, 1950-1965, 23-34C
part number? - type III heater channel ductwork, 135-140C

The bellows is identical for all of these, the only differences are the type IV is setup for a pull cable instead of a push rod, and the different charge fluids to open at the proper temperature range.

Any help would be appreciated!

I concur with all of the above, including 111 119 159 (75-80°C)...sorry that I can't help with the Type III or Porsche. I found a discussion (but no P/N) of the 356 part here: http://porsche356registry.org/356talk/1/7390.html
I didn't realize that the temperature was that low on the 356 aircleaner t'stat (when you think about what it does, it would have to be near "room-temperature") ...what fluid would they use? Ether boils at 35°C at atmospheric pressure, perhaps under vacuum it's that much lower?
Marc wrote:...There are at least 4 t'stats that I know of.
The 043 119 159 (80-85°C) for `75-up Beetles comes closest to the 021 119 159A in temperature - next would be the 111 119 159 (not 159A) for pre`62 bug/bus (75-80°C). And since there's an 021 119 159A there may also be an 021 119 159 out there somewhere.
The `62-`74 Beetle, etc. P/N 111 119 159A is coolest at 65-70°C.
Type III heater boxes have a thermostat inside that controls the mixing valve, too, and it looks like it may be of the same design as the non-IV units but I don't know its part number or temp rating.
BTW, there were some early 1963s that still had the "non-fresh" heating system, so differentiating by model year isn't 100% accurate. 111 119 159 is for non-fresh (25, 36, & 40HP) and 111 119 159A is for freshair Type I (12/13/15/1600, carbureted) and all Type III.

thanks! good to know about the 36hp stat.

Actually, the 356 stat does use straight ether!

bentley says type 3 thermostat opens at 65-70ºC (both carb and FI)

the 140ºC one inside the type 3 heater mixing box would be PN 311 255 257
