bus engine fit in bug

Post by landrocket »

I have to ask the pro's. Found an engine, guy says it is a 1776 built for a 1967 camper bus, and I have a stock 1967 bug, with a 1600 dp. Will this bolt right up? Thx, Ron

Hi Landrocket,

Yes, that should be a direct fit.

Good luck,

Definitely a bolt in. My grandfathers bus broke down one night. Instead of towing it home, my uncle removed the engine from his Beetle and my father took the engine down and installed it in the bus and they drove it home. They had to put some 2X4 under the engine and kind of baby it because it didn't have the same mounts as a bus but that was it. Bus engine into a Beetle is no issues.

There are some subtle differences between a stock `67 Beetle engine and a stock `67 Bus engine, but the only significant ones are the intake manifold, carb jetting, and muffler - I doubt any of those items are still original on a 1775, though. Both had an H0xxxxxx case, essentially the same as the `66 F0 1300 item. Not a particularly good choice for anything beyond a stock 13/15/1600 SP, but a darn sight better than an H5 or B5...what's the case ID on this one?

Is this one a DP also? What oil cooler/shroud setup is on it and on your 1600DP? What's wrong with the 1600DP?

Thx for the replies. Mine is just worn out, I probably will just rebuild it and call it good. It leaks like a sieve, but I finally got it running great. I just want more power, but the 1600 is bullet proof and so simple to work on.

I asked about the cooler/shroud arrangements for a reason, in case you'll want to transfer any pieces to the "new" motor. Still want to know the case ID, as some are potentially good, some are lucky to be serviceable at all, and some should only be used as doorstops.

Before you put money into the "old" engine, what's its ID? And again, the cooler/shroud configuration?

A `67 does not have adequate cooling air supply for a 1600 unless you prop the lid open or cut some holes in it (a convertible lid is the most deluxe solution, but that's a one-year-only rare item).

I think it is either AE or AH. It has the dog house set up. I plan on installing stand-offs, it overheats unless I prop open the deck lid, thx for the replies.

Those are both potentially good cases. AE came with 10mm headstuds and no inserts while AH is 8mm. Either can serve well once the necessary machinework's done if it hasn't got too many miles on it.
So, you are not going to buy the 1775?
