For some reason my manual doesn't include the diagram for the fan install. Lots of pics of it all, but no diagram. Who knows ... it's a hand-me-down.
I'm trying to find out what direction the wave washer goes for the fan install. Can anyone link me to the install diagram?
I pulled the cover and such off of a donor engine and I know how it was installed there, but I'm second guessing it all as there was no inner backing plate on this one ... so who knows what else they goofed up.
I'm honestly not even sure my wave washer is correct. It's round with two opposing sides bent at an angle. It was installed with the raised areas facing the nut, as to keep it from backing off. I read someone say here (I think) that the washer should face the fan, so I just wanted to be sure.
I'm pretty sure I've got everything but the inner backing plate, and the diagram will help me ensure that too.

It'd probably function just as well either way, but convention is concave side out as it was (that makes it less likely to shift before the nut is tightened down). Note that 45lb-ft is plenty of torque on the nut. There are typically up to three shims (same as pulley shims) present at the fan end as well, the location of which is determined by how it clears best in the shroud. Be sure that you have 8 or 9 shims total for the pulley end, less than 8 puts you at risk of the nut bottoming out before the pulley's clamped together which causes the pulley halves to chatter and chew into each other.
The small-diameter generators (like most 6V and 912 12V) do not have an inner plate, just the outer one and the small ring. On the large-diameter units there's a slot in the perimeter of the plate that should point down (6:00) - the terminals on the generator are at 1:00-2:00 when installed for the slot to remain that orientation.

Thanks Marc. I guess this may have been an older style as there was just the one plate and I did have to move the stud location to the inside holes on the aftermarket alternator. I picked up a set of OEM plates over the weekend ... and I'm guessing, based on your notes, that they will have the wider pattern. That's unfortunate, as I was not able to remove the rear plate on the alt to completely remove one of the screws. That'll be fun to figure out to fit the OEM stuff.
I'm just guessing that the large diameter plates are the better ones? Or am I just as well off sticking with the single plate? It's an aftermarket 75a version.
I read the notes on the shims, but thanks for the reminder. I've actually got an aftermarket billet pulley that uses larger shims, so I've got all 10 of those plus the standard size that I can use for the fan. The old alt I have had 2+1 shims, but they are kinda nasty. I'm going to go with all new ones and the suggested fan gap.

The late tin with the wider stud spacing is preferred since it promotes airflow through the gen/alt.
The factory wiring is inadequate for a 75A alternator but it's simple to remedy, just add a 10GA wire from the B+ terminal to the battery cable at the starter solenoid.
If it's an older car that came with a small-diameter 6V generator that's the only B+ wire so make sure it's in good condition - you might consider replacing it with 8GA.

I'm rewiring everything in the car. Brand new dash, MegaSquirt, etc. Going to run 4awg to starter and 8awg from starter to alt with fusable link inline. Jumping 12 awg between terminals with 15a fuse and resistor inline to excite the coil.
That should cover me, right?

I'd rather have a warning light to alert me if the belt should toss, and that's not where a fusible link is typically installed. I think you should invite comments in the Electrical Forum.
