They usually run with Linux, Android---is Linux, but not quite "normal".
With Android v3+ they came up with "USB-On-the-go" which are a limited set of "not-quite USB" devices and adapters to a few normal devices (like USB sticks) that at least blessedly are cheap.
Some Android devices support many std USB devices.
Most don't, but that's from a descision NOT to support it, not because it is incapable.
(Google hates local storage, and want's you to keep ~everything in their cloud...
...which is kinda stupid in the middle of the desert)
Does your device have a std USB port on it?
It MAY work, or may need some tweaking.
Is Linux (native) installable or is it locked down?
Is there a modder community for it?
Got root?

It has a micro USB with 2 Micro USB to USB adapter cables, (1 male and 1 female, which I haven't figured out yet).Piledriver wrote:Does your device have a std USB port on it?
I don't know if I can install Linux on it yet, although I plan to run it off of a memory card.Piledriver wrote:Is Linux (native) installable or is it locked down?

Haven't found a modder community for it yet, but am looking.
Not tried to get root yet, but I watched a Youtube video about it, and it made my brain hurt.

Re: Using a Tablet with TunerStudio for MS2
I spent WAY too much time this weekend trying to get my Android tablet to boot from a memory card. Unsuccessfully every time. I finally went to my friends house and tried his memory card, with Lubuntu on it, and had no success there either. He is running his Android stick computer off of it. I did find a, app that would let me install Ubuntu on my android form here: http://linuxonandroid.org/
Apparently, I have to "root" mine now. Oh, and it has to capable of "looping". WTF is "looping"? I did a lot of research for a program that would root my particular tablet and couldn't find any suitable to it's particular Kernel. Through all of this, I also managed to screw up the Ubuntu installation on my laptop, although I was able to reinstall that fairly quickly.
The only upside to this situation right now, is that my daughter has taken a liking to it and might trade me for her Kindle Fire. I've seen TS running on one of those and it seems less "dark artish" than what I'm attempting to do. I'd still like to get TS running on this, cheap, platform, but doubt my ability to do it.
Here's my current advice to anyone that might want to try this. Do your research and find out what devices have already been rooted and are capable of looping. Get one that DEFINITELY has built in Bluetooth.

Re: Using a Tablet with TunerStudio for MS2
Go with the Kindle Fire if it has BT (I think it does)
There are very clear How-Tos out there to root/mod that device and it is well supported.
My "Android" devices are now more likely to say "ThinkPad" on them at this point, I have already developed a horrible addiction to old Thinkpads, I have two and an eyeing a third with bad intent.
(probably to fix/resell though, this X300 is a totlly slick little bit of gear, as it should be for ~$3K (when new))
Android-x86 is almost there.

What about the new Asus TF700T pad??
I just got my Wife one for her birthday and I must say it is a pretty cool device. When you add the keyboard it is just a 10.1 inch computer..........

That seems to allow running android on x86 (PC) hardware. What we need is opposite direction, X86 on the cheapo ARM tablets.Piledriver wrote:

I spent about what a new "cheapo" decent arm tablet costs on 2 Thinkpads with FAR more power and memory, and one is a tablet.Steve Arndt wrote:That seems to allow running android on x86 (PC) hardware. What we need is opposite direction, X86 on the cheapo ARM tablets.Piledriver wrote:

I'll probably make as much fixing up and reselling them to buy a nice new Nexus7 32G, if not more.
...Assuming i don't just keep them.
...one is a convertible tablet, they both run Linux or Win8 just peachy.(or Android, once they get past the 3.0 kernels, graphics issues on i915 back then)
Jelly Bean looks GREAT on a 13.1" LED backlit screen, and works excellent with a trackpoint/keyboard.
Std x86 linux in a chroot (or Windows in a VM) are a gimme.
8gb RAM is an option, and a/g/b/n-300(dual band) wifi and 3G WWAN are on board.

That would be nice.Piledriver wrote:What we need is opposite direction, X86 on the cheapo ARM tablets.
I tried a Lubuntu image, written to a memory card, in my Android tablet last night. Still no joy. This same card boots just fine in my friend's Android Mini stick computer, (MK802).
This is like going to the hardware store and asking for a "bolt". I don't know what size or thread pitch I need and there are too many options. At least with a bolt, however, I can ask someone for help.

Re: Using a Tablet with TunerStudio for MS2
If you have not:
1)rooted your tablet and
2)have an image that works with you hardware, (or KNOW how to do/make both of those things happen)
..you are simply ~beating yourself endlessly with a rock.
Steal the Kindle Fire.
Hit xda-developers website
follow the fine instructions to simply get root and/or download a full blown linux image etc.
They exist.
(I'd probably try rooting + installing Ubuntu in a chroot first, and trying TS from there)
There are also Jelly Bean builds for the Kindle Fire IIRC, might want to try that first.
Until you have root you ~do not own the machine, and basically cannot change jack.

Re: Using a Tablet with TunerStudio for MS2
I'm researching the rooting procedure for this tablet.
Still trying to talk my daughter out of the Kindle Fire......
FWIW, I've seek 1st generation Kindle Fires going for ~$75. That's about what I have in this tablet. Maybe I should shelf the Android tablet and pick up one of these?

Re: Using a Tablet with TunerStudio for MS2
Admittedly, I haven't read every post, but here's something I've been looking into for something unrelated that might work out well for in-car tuning
Not a tablet, but a cool option for a someone looking for a more permanent install, and a good value IMO for what it is: http://www.hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/ ... 5341370451
It would need a power adapter, lcd, and bt keyboard/mouse, but they come shipped with android, or you could use a linux distro built for ARM. You could probably fit the entire setup in the glovebox and do all your tuning in the car, and it's more powerful than something like the RaspberryPi

Re: Using a Tablet with TunerStudio for MS2
That would make a cool carputer for sure. by the time you added BT, a monitor of some sort, power supply, mouse/keyboard combo, and a case, you'd be over the price of a Kindle Fire though. If, however, you wanted to do quite a bit more than tune MS, listen to music, and run GPS, that board would be great!Slamd72btl wrote:Not a tablet, but a cool option for a someone looking for a more permanent install, and a good value IMO for what it is: http://www.hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/ ... 5341370451

They are both android tablets.
The fire has much better specs and a large support//modder community, so is a ~infinitely better choice.
There are multiple flavors of Android available for it as well as bare metal linux setups.
Linux in a chroot is viable as well.

Re: Using a Tablet with TunerStudio for MS2
Looks like I'm going to have to find a Kindle for sure now. The alignment of the micro USB port on the cheapo tablet is not very good, and I just managed to shove it right off the board trying to hook up the micro USB to USB adapter.
